2004 Men's Cross Country Review

NICK JOHNSON WINS MVP HONORS AS VIKINGS JUST MISS NCAA DIVISION III NATIONAL QUALIFYING SPOT

Senior Nick Johnson (Lincoln Way HS, New Lenox, IL) was tabbed as the Most Valuable Performer on the 2004 Augustana Vikings men’s cross country team.

Johnson was the number one runner for the Vikings in four of the six meets he competed in this past fall. He started the season by winning the Augustana Open back on September 3 with a time of 20:29 and one week later he placed 12th at the Luther Invitational in Decorah, Iowa and led the Vikings to a solid third place finish in the 16 team meet. He also was the top Augustana finisher (45th) at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 1 and the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional (25th) on November 13 at Credit Island Park in Davenport, Iowa. He placed 21st in the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on September 24 as the Vikings won the team title in the 29 team event and he was 17th at the Wisconsin Oshkosh Invitational on October 16 to lead the Blue & Gold to a third place finish. A hip injury prevented him from running in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin meet. He has twice been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team and he is also a nominee for an NCAA post-graduate scholarship.

He served as the team captain this fall as Augustana enjoyed tremendous success under the direction of veteran head coach Paul Olsen. The Vikings won the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational, placed second in the CCIW, third in the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational and the Luther All-America Invitational. In the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional, Augustana was seventh just missing the fifth qualifying spot by 22 points.

Johnson and Jeff Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, IL) shared the Most Inspirational Award while Andy Mead (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, IL – now resides in Columbia, SC) and Tim Frey (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, IL) were the co-winners of the Most Improved Award. Dan Leonard (Fremd HS, Palatine, IL) won the Most Valuable Freshman honor.

Olsen also named captains for 2005 and those will be Jake Shaver (Normal University HS, Bloomington, IL), Dustin Marquis (Bureau Valley HS, Buda, IL) and Adam Houghton (Havana HS, Havana, IL).
