2010 Season - 2010 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW

In 2010 the Augustana women's cross country team competed in a total of 11 meets. The Vikings won the Western Illinois Invitational and were second in both the Loras and St. Ambrose Invitationals.

Senior Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) and sophomore Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) shared the Most Valuable Performer awards for the 2010 Augustana women's cross country team. The two split leadership duties for the Vikings of veteran head coach Fred Whiteside throughout the campaign. Hottle was the top finisher on the team in four meets (Illinois Intercollegiate, Brissman/Lundeen Invitational, Western Ontario Invitational and CCIW championship) while Coverick was the first Viking in three races (NIU Invitational, Loras Invitational and Midwest Regional).

Hottle's best finish was a fifth at the Western Illinois Invitational while Coverick's top performance was a seventh in the Loras Invitational. For Hottle, this was her second straight MVP award while Coverick was the Most Valuable Freshman a year ago.

Whiteside recently finished his 29 th season at the helm of the Vikings' cross country program. After starting the season with an open race against Monmouth on September 1, Augustana wasted no time getting into the action. At the Western Illinois Invitational on September 3 in Macomb, Illinois, sophomore Tara Bistro's (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) fourth place performance led the way as the Vikings won the seven team meet with 28 points.

A week later Augustana traveled to DeKalb, Illinois and finished fourth in the Northern Illinois Invitational, using solid balance and led by Coverick's 22 nd place finish. The Illinois Intercollegiate meet was next on September 17 in Normal, Illinois and the Vikings were 13 th out of 31 teams with Hottle leading the way with an 81 st place finish. That field had six NCAA Division I teams in it.

At the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 24 at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Hottle once again was the team's top finisher. She placed 36 th and the Vikings were 11 th in the 24 team field. A trip North of the border was next on the schedule and Augustana placed third in an 11-team field at the Western Ontario Invitational on October 7 in London, Ontario. Hottle was the top finisher with a 16 th place performance.

Coverick's seventh place individual finish helped lead the team to a second place in the Loras Bob Tucker Invitational on Friday, October 15 in Dubuque, Iowa. One week later the Vikings were second in the St. Ambrose Invitational with sophomore Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) leading the way with a fourth place finish.

Hottle took 17 th at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on October 30 at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois and the Vikings were fifth in the team standings. The season ended with a 17 th place in the 38 team NCAA Division III Midwest Regional, which was also held at Saukie.

While Hottle and Coverick were sharing the MVP award, Emma Grandgeorge (Sycamore HS, Sycamore, Ill.) was voted the team's Most Valuable Freshman. She was a consistent top seven runner, finishing in the top seven in eight of the nine meets she competed in.

Two Vikings split the Most Improved Runner award: junior Angela Pisani (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and freshman Alexandra Blust (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) . Pisani was a multiple top seven runner and Blust enjoyed a solid first year of competition at the collegiate level. Senior Brittany Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) and her sophomore sister Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) shared the Erica Vortman Viking Spirit Award.

Hottle and Brittany Prazak served as team captains in 2010 and the captains-elect for 2011 are Pisani, Melissa Lehpamer (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) and Sarah Johnson (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) .
