2010 Season - Lee, Mago, Hembry win MVP honors in football

Alex Hembrey was selected as the Special Team MVP for the 2010 Augustana football team. He averaged 27.0 yards per return on kickoff returns.

Senior linebacker John Mago (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and junior quarterback David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.) have been named Augustana’s defensive and offensive Most Valuable Players for the 2010 season. Freshman running back and kick returner Alex Hembrey (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) was named special teams MVP.

Mago, a team captain, first team All-CCIW and second team all-region performer and ESPN first team Academic All-American, was the Vikings’ leading tackler this year. He not only led the team with 114 total tackles, but in both solo stops (54) and assists (60). He was second in the CCIW in solo tackles with 45 and total stops with 72, finishing just one off the league lead in each. The 5’11”, 215-pound linebacker had 11 tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks and an interception as well. Mago was also selected, along with teammates Curt Perschnick and Drew Hansen, to play in the Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) to be played in Monterrey, Mexico on December 18.

Lee, a second team All-CCIW selection, continued his assault on the Augustana record book this season. He finished the year with 195 completions in 317 attempts—both school single-season records—for a 61.5% completion percentage. His 2,411 passing yards were also a new school record as were his 2,655 yards of total offense. In addition, he broke his own mark for passing yards in a game with 429 versus Carthage and twice tied his own standard with 28 completions in a game. With one season left to play, the 6’3”, 219-pound Lee is within striking distance of Ken Anderson’s career records for passing yards (6,131), pass attempts (827), completions (424), touchdown passes (48) and total offense (6,679).

Hembrey was limited by injury to just five games this season, but the 5’10”, 170-pounder made his presence felt on both special teams and offense. He brought back 14 kickoffs for an average of 27.0 yards per return, including a long of 53 yards versus Adrian. Hembrey was also the Vikings’ third leading rusher with 158 yards on 29 attempts, an average of 5.4 yards per carry.

Augustana freshman MVP awards went to linebacker Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) on defense and wide receiver Nick Krantz (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) on offense. The 6’3”, 200-pound Westerberg tied for eighth on the team with 36 tackles (13 solo and 23 assists), including two for loss and one quarterback sack. He also had one interception. Krantz caught seven passes for 125 yards, an average of 13.9 yards per reception, with a long of 46 yards. He also returned eight kickoffs for an average 20.6 yards.

Senior Brandon Holl (Batavia HS, North Aurora, Ill.) was named the Jerry Freck Most Inspirational Award winner. The 6’1”, 220-pound linebacker battled injuries all season. Despite being limited to six games, he was in on 42 tackles—an average of 7.0 per game, which was second on the team—including seven for loss and a pair of sacks. He broke up two passes and forced a fumble as well. Holl’s award is named for the late Jerry Freck, who was the Augustana team manager in the late 1970’s and it symbolizes the intangible concept of being a team player and contributing wherever possible to the success of the Vikings.

Sophomores Kyle Gipson (Michele Clark Academic Prep, Chicago, Ill.) and Erik Hansen (Immaculate Conception HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) were named scout team MVP’s on offense and defense, respectively.

The Vikings finished 6-4 in 2010 and tied for third in the CCIW at 4-3.
