2010-11 Season - Six technical falls spearhead win over Knox

Steve Poffenberger was one of six Vikings to record technical falls in Augustana's 51-0 victory over Knox on Wednesday, December 15.

Victories in all 10 weight classes pointed to complete domination on Wednesday, December 15 as Augustana defeated Knox 51-0 in wrestling action. The Vikings scored one pin, six technical falls and one forfeit in piling up big points on the Prairie Fire.

Freshman Justin Hoffman (East Buchanan HS, Winthrop, Iowa) picked up the lone fall for the Vikings when he decked Dylan Reynolds at 3:15 of the 157 pound weight class.

Freshman Jacob Scholten (Rockford HS, Grandville, Mich.) got things started with a 16-0 technical fall in the 125 pound weight class against Francisco Munoz. Scholten moved to 15-4 on the season with the win. Scholten was one of six Vikings who won by technical fall.

After sophomore Greg Gogonas (Bowie HS, Austin, Texas) picked up a forfeit at 133, junior Alberto Quiros (Morton HS, Cicero, Ill.) won by technical fall (21-6) against Jason Lafvor at 141 pounds. Quiros is now 15-5 this year. Sophomore Steve Poffenberger (Allegan HS, Paw Paw, Mich.) picked up a technical fall (20-5) against Dugan O’Connor at 149.

Hoffman recorded his fall in the 157 pound weight class and freshman Jordan Graham (Big Rapids HS, Fremont, Mich.) won in a technical fall (16-1) over Sergio Ulloa at 165. Graham is 12-5 in his first season of collegiate wrestling.

Sophomore Alex Vavra (Gull Lake HS, Dowling, Mich.) beat Alex Faulkner (21-6) with still another technical fall at 174 and in the process upped his record to a team leading 17-4. Sophomore Hunter Feraco (Gull Lake HS, Battle Creek, Mich.) picked up a technical fall over Isaac Juarez at 184 by a score of 16-1. He is now 12-7 this year.

Senior Matt Nykaza (Brother Rice HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) won by forfeit at 197 to move to 7-3 and senior Tim Day (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) picked up a win in the only close match of the evening. He beat James Wagner in the 285 pound class by a score of 6-4 and is now 5-2.

Augustana is 3-1 in dual meets heading into a match Friday night at Loras.
