2010-11 Season - Vikings jump to 12th in NCAA basketball poll

The Vikings gave their home fans in the Carver Center plenty to cheer about with a pair of victories over top 20 opponents Washington and Anderson. Augustana has jumped to 12th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll conducted by D3hoops.com.

Victories over two opponents who were ranked in the top 20 in the preseason allowed Augustana to climb to 12 th in the first NCAA Division III men’s basketball ranking of the 2010-11 season. The Vikings jumped from 24 th in the preseason to 12 th today in the first poll of the season conducted by D3hoops.com.

Augustana is now 3-0 on the season and last week scored a 78-55 win over then number 20 Washington on Monday, November 22 and followed that with a 74-69 win over 14 th ranked Anderson on Saturday, November 27. The Vikings opened the 2010-11 campaign with an 85-66 win at Simpson on November 16.

The Vikings of veteran head coach Grey Giovanine are getting tremendous play out of senior center Kyle Nelson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.). Nelson, a 6-9, 230 pound post player, leads the team in scoring with an average of 22.3 points per game (67 points in three games). He is also the Vikings’ leading rebounder at 8.0 (24 in three games). Nelson is shooting .765 (26-34) from the floor and .882 (15-17) from the free throw line.

Junior guard Chris Anderson (West Carroll HS, Mt. Carroll, Ill.) is second on the team in scoring with a 16.3 average (49 points in three games) and junior Bryant Voiles (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) is also in double figures at 10.3. Voiles leads the team in assists with 13 while junior point guard Brian DeSimone (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) is next with 11.

Augustana is shooting .531 (86-162) from the floor and .800 (48-60) from the free throw line. The Vikings are averaging 79.0 points per game and giving up 63.3. Opponents are shooting just .428 (62-145) from the floor.

Augustana has made fairly regular appearances in the D3hoops.com “Top 25” since Giovanine took over as the head coach prior to 1999-00. The D3hoops.com poll began in the 2000-01 season and the Vikings have been in the top 25 a total of 73 times out of 162 possible weeks. They have been in either the top 25 or listed as “others receiving votes” 114 times.

The Vikings will play tonight (Wednesday, December 1) at Monmouth in a non-conference game against the Scots with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. The next home game will be Wednesday, December 8 against Quad City rival St. Ambrose in the Carver Center. Again, tip-off for that game will 7:30 p.m.
