2010-11 Season - Runge's 27 not enough in loss at Webster

Natalie Runge poured in 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds but it was not enough at Augustana fell 62-60 to Webster in St. Louis, Missouri on Saturday, November 27.

Junior Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) continued her strong play this season, turning in a 27 point, 13 rebound performance as the Augustana women’s basketball team battled Webster on Saturday, November 27 in St. Louis, Missouri.  The Vikings led the entire first half and then traded the lead back and forth with the Gorloks before falling 62-60 in a tightly contested affair.

Runge came out on fire, scoring the first six points for the visitors as Augustana jumped out in front 6-1 just minutes into the game.  Junior Whitney Miller (Clinton HS, Clinton, Iowa) drilled a three pointer to extend the advantage to 9-1 at the 15:30 mark.

After five more points from Runge, freshman Jessica Baids (West Chicago HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) scored her first bucket of the contest, extending the lead to double digits at 16-5 and giving Augustana its biggest lead of the day.  The Vikings were able to maintain an edge throughout the remainder of the opening half, but the Gorloks crept back into the game, closing within 25-24 at the 4:21 mark and trailing 34-29 at intermission.

Senior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) nailed a pair of three point field goals in the first minute of the second stanza as the Blue & Gold pushed the advantage back to nine at 40-31, but the momentum shifted quickly with Webster tallying the next 10 points to earn the lead for the first time all day.  A pair of three point buckets keyed the Gorlock rally that was finally stopped when Fox connected on a free throw to knot the game at 41-41.

Another Runge jumper put Augustana ahead by two, but Webster went back to the three point attack, nailing two more to pull out in front 47-43.  The lead changed hands again when the Vikings used a 7-0 spurt to take back the lead 50-47 with 7:57 to play.

The game was later tied at 52-52 after junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) connected on her only field goal attempt at the 5:22 mark.  Augustana grabbed the lead for the final time with the next four points, holding a slim 56-52 edge with under four minutes remaining.

The Gorloks responded by outplaying the Vikings down the stretch, outscoring the Blue & Gold 10-4 in the final 3:21 to pull out the two point win.  Another pair of trifectas from the home squad proved fatal for Augustana with the final one putting Webster in front to stay at the 1:48 mark.

Runge led both teams in scoring and also on the glass, earning a double-double along the way.  Fox was second on the team with nine points while Miller contributed six points, nine rebounds, and six assists.

The Vikings are 0-4 overall and will face Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri on Sunday, November 28.
