INDIANOLA, Iowa - A 29-7 run that lasted over the first 10 minutes of the second half proved to be decisive as Augustana opened the 2010-11 season with an impressive 85-66 non-conference victory over Simpson, The road win for the 24th ranked (D3hoops.com) Vikings was helped along by some stellar shooting and complete domination on the backboards.
The victory provided a milestone for head coach Grey Giovanine as it was the 200th in his career at Augustana. Giovanine, who became the Vikings’ head coach in 1999, is now 200-89 in this, his 12 season at the helm. He is now 280-174 in his collegiate career after compiling an 80-85 record in six seasons at NCAA Division I Lamar from 1993-99.
Augustana led by just one point (15-14) with 14:24 left in the first half when the Vikings outscored the hosts 15-2 over the next five minutes to take a 30-16 lead with 10:31 to play. Chris Anderson’s (West Carroll HS, Mount Carroll, Ill.) three point field goal off an assist by Troy Rorer (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) capped the run. Simpson battled back, however, and after Augustana led 45-33 on a Rorer basket with 2:28 to play in the first half, the Red Storm went on a run of its own. Simpson held the Vikings without a point for the remainder of the first half and the 7-0 spurt closed the gap to 45-40 at intermission.
Over the first 10-plus minutes of the second half, however, the Vikings put the contest away with a 29-7 run to forge a 74-47 advantage with 9:19 to play when Kyle Nelson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) scored on an assist by George Dexter (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa).
Nelson, an all-conference and all-regional performer a year ago, led Augustana with 22 points on eight of 11 from the field. He was also perfect (six of six) from the free throw line and grabbed six rebounds, had one assist and two steals. That was all in just 20 minutes of action.
He was joined in double figures by Anderson with 14 and Dexter with 11. The Vikings scorched the nets for a .667 shooting percentage by making 32 of 48 shots. They were .600 (18-30) in the first half and then sizzled at a .778 (14-18) clip in the second half. Throw in a .895 (17-19) performance from the free throw line and the domination was total.
A 35-14 advantage in the rebound department certainly did not hurt as well. Dexter led the way with seven rebounds while Nelson had six and Bryant Voiles (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) had five to go along with four assists and one steal.
J.J. Vanderheiden led Simpson in scoring with 17 points and Stefon Brown added 15. After allowing the Red Storm to shoot .476 (10-21) in the first half, the Vikings put the clamps on in the second half and Simpson shot just .333 (8-24) to finish at .400 (18-45) for the game.
