2010-11 Season - Four placewinners key sixth place finish at Knox

Led by four individual placewinners, Augustana placed sixth at the Knox Invitational on Saturday, November 13 in Galesburg, Illinois. The Vikings scored 93.5 points, just ½ point out of fifth place, in the 14 team field. North Central won the meet with 153 points while Oklahoma City was second with 152.5 points. Central of Iowa was third with 130 points, Truman State took fourth with 124.5 and Wisconsin-Platteville was fifth with 94. Milwaukee School of Engineering (79.0), Concordia-Nebraska (70.0), Dubuque (56.0), Knox (48.5), Simpson (44.5), Hannibal-LaGrange (36.5), Illinois State (14.0) and Northland International (3.0) rounded out the field.
Junior Alberto Quiros (Morton East HS, Cicero, Ill.) was the top finisher for Augustana. He placed third at 141 pounds with a 3-1 decision over Ryan Mans of Truman State in the third place match. Quiros opened the tournament with a pin in 2:07 against Brad Goehring of Central of Iowa. He followed that with an 8-3 victory over Eric Wilkerson of Central of Iowa before losing to Andrew Zobac of North Central 9-4 in the semi-finals. He bounced back with a 4-3 win over Hunter Muskratt of Oklahoma City in the consolation semi-final before beating Mans 4-3 for third place. He finished the tournament with a 4-2 record.
Freshman Jacob Scholten (Rockford HS, Grandville, Mich.) at 125, sophomore Greg Gogonas (Bowie HS, Austin, Texas) at 133, and sophomore Alex Vavra (Gull Lake HS, Dowling, Mich.) at 174 all finished fourth in their respective weight classes.
Scholten opened the tournament with a 13-4 major decision over David Scarano of North Central at 125 pounds. He lost a tough 7-6 battle to Mack Drees of Wisconsin-Platteville and went into the consolation bracket after that. He won three straight matches to reach the third place match. First he beat Jeff Green of Concordia-Nebraska 10-4, handled Dominick Deligio of Milwaukee School of Engineering 10-8 and then manhandled Sam Deligio of MSOE 11-2. That put him in the third place match against Mack Drees of Wisconsin-Platteville and he fell 6-4. Scholten ended up with a 4-2 record.
Gogonas beat Nichalos Shea of Truman State 10-4 in the opening round and then outscored Alex Wright of Central of Iowa 14-10 in a wild quarterfinal bout. He lost to nationally ranked Edel Vaca of Knox 2-0 in the semi-finals. In the consolation bracket he defeated Shea again, this time by a score of 5-2 but in the third place match fell to Adam Joseph of Concordia-Nebraska by score of 4-0. Gogonas was 3-2 in the tournament.
Vavra won his first three matches, starting with a pin at 6:21 of his match with Marcus Rokosh of MSOE. He followed that with an 11-2 win over Nick Lemmon of Central of Iowa and a 2-0 win over Tanner Erdman of Simpson. He lost 8-3 to Dan Capp of Hannibal-LaGrange in the semi-finals and then was pinned at 1:24 by Nick Gelsosomo of Wisconsin-Platteville in the third place match. He was 4-2 on the day.
Although not placing, three Vikings did finish the day with 3-2 records. Freshman Bradley McDermott (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) was 3-2 at 133 pounds. Sophomore Steve Poffenberger (Allegan HS, Paw Paw, Mich.) went 3-2 at 149 pounds, including a pair of pins. Sophomore Hunter Feraco (Gull Lake HS, Battle Creek, Mich.) was 3-2 at 184 pounds.
In all, the Vikings won a total of 34 matches during the tournament. Augustana will be in action again this weekend at the Concordia-Wisconsin Invitational in Mequon, Wisconsin.
