2010 Season - Augustana douses Prairie Fire 8-0

Freshman John McSpadden recorded a hat trick and added an assist Tuesday night as Augustana defeated Knox by a score of 8-0.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Two goals by freshman John McSpadden (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) in the first four and a half minutes set the tone Tuesday night as Augustana roared by visiting Knox by a score of 8-0 at Ericson Field. With the win, the Vikings improve to 4-6-1 on the year. The Prairie Fire are now 2-9-1.

McSpadden scored his third goal of the year in the fourth minute and added another less than a minute later on an assist from freshman Matt Shipon (South Elgin HS, Elgin, Ill.). The helper was Shipon's first of the season. McSpadden was far from done, assisting on Kevin Wyrostek's (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) first goal of the year in the 16th minute to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.

Augustana took a 5-0 lead into halftime as Nick Wolfe (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Greg Maggio (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) each scored their first goals of the season. Both were unassisted and came in the 35th and 39th minute respectively.

Anthony Adeniran (Loyola Jesuit HS, Ogbomoso, Nigeria) joined the scoring parade in the second half, finding the net for the third time this year less than a minute into the second period. He added his fourth goal of the season in the 65th minute to make the score 7-0. Fittingly, it was McSpadden who closed out the scoring by completing the hat trick on an assist from Scott Cella (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) in the 79th minute. It was Cella's first assist of the year.

Freshman goalkeeper Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) got the shutout in his first collegiate start, recording saves on both of the Prairie Fire shot attempts in the game. The Vikings outshot Knox by a 31-2 margin, including a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal. They also had an 11-0 edge in corner kicks.

Next up for the Vikings is a match versus Millikin in Decatur, Illinois on Saturday, October 9 at 2:30 p.m.
