2010 Season - Vikings win two of three at IWU Tournament

Courtney Jungnickel was named to the all-tournament team at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday, October 2. It was the second straight all-tournament selection for Jungnickel, who was named to the all-tournament team at the Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational last weekend.

BLOOMINGTON, Illinois - Fueled by the all-tournament-team performance of senior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), Augustana won two of three matches at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2.

The Vikings defeated Albion 3-0 on Friday to start the tournament on a positive note. After dropping a 3-1 decision to Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday, October 2, Augustana rallied and closed out the weekend with a thrilling 3-2 win over Alma.

In the win over Albion, the Vikings posted scores of 25-13; 26-24 and 25-22 and Brianna Skeens (Libertyville HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) led the way with 11 kills.

Augustana dropped the first two games of the IIT match, losing 27-25 and 25-16 before pulling off a 25-16 victory in game three. IIT clinched the match with a 25-23 win in game four. Jungnickel had 12 kills in that match.

The Alma match went to the wire and the Vikings had to come-from-behind to pick up the win. Alma won the first two games by scores of 28-26 and 25-23. Augustana won game three 25-23 and game four 25-17 and then closed things out with a 15-12 win. Jungnickel had 24 kills, 18 digs and five service aces in the victory and Skeens had 19 kills and one solo block.

Jungnickel was named to the all-tournament team after she compiled 43 kills, 44 digs and six service aces in 12 games. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Alexis Brumm (Albion), Brittany Donelan (Heidelberg), Kelsey England (Millikin), Alex Hill (Illinois Wesleyan) and Kate Kendall (Illinois Institute of Technology).

Augustana, which at one time this season was 1-8, has now won seven of its last 12 matches to move to 8-13 overall.

The Vikings host Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin contest in the Carver Center.

AUGUSTANA 3, ALBION 0 (25-13; 26-24; 25-22) on Friday, October 1
The Vikings swept an Albion team that was no doubt tired after having played a five set match against Illinois Wesleyan and a four setter with Robert Morris earlier in the day. Junior middle hitter Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) led the offense with 11 kills. She also had two service aces, one solo block and one assisted block. Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) had seven kills and 16 digs. Freshman Kristen Yerkes (Marist HS, Palos Heights, Ill.) chipped in with five kills, four digs, two assisted blocks and one service ace. Sophomore Sarah Williams (Rockford Lutheran HS, Rockford, Ill.) had four kills, one solo block and two assisted blocks. Sophomore setter Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) picked up 21 assist while freshman Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) added 10 setting assists and four digs. Sophomore Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) led the team in digs with 19. Augustana won the first game easily by the score of 25-13 but had to battle hard in games two (26-24) and three (25-22).

ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 3, AUGUSTANA 1 (27-25; 16-25; 25-16; 25-23)
Despite 12 kills from senior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), the Vikings fell in four games to IIT. Augustana dropped a close one in the first set by the score of 27-25 and then fell 25-16 in the second. Facing a tough road, the Vikings won game three 25-16 but lost 25-23 in the fourth. Jungnickel had 10 digs and a service ace to go along with her 12 kills. Junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) picked up seven kills, one assisted block and one dig. Sophomore Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) had a team high 25 digs and also added two service aces. Sophomore Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had 13 setting assists, seven digs and a service ace while freshman Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) contributed 11 setting assists, seven digs and two service aces. Freshman Kristen Yerkes (Marist HS, Palos Heights, Ill.) put down four kills and had four service aces and six kills.

AUGUSTANA 3, ALMA 2 (26-28; 23-25; 25-23; 25-17; 15-12)
After falling into a 0-2 hole the Vikings won three straight games to defeat the Scots 3-2. Alma won the first game 28-26 and took the second 25-23. Augustana stayed alive with a narrow 25-23 victory in the third set and then forced a fifth and deciding match with a 25-17 win in game four. The Vikings clinched the match with a 15-12 victory in game five. Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) ripped off 24 kills and had 18 digs with five service aces, one setting assist and one blocking assist to lead the way. Junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) was also very effective, nailing 19 kills with one solo block. Sophomore Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) had 31 digs. Freshman setter Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) recorded 28 setting assists and had 14 digs. Sophomore setter Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had 23 setting assists with nine digs. Freshman Kristen Yerkes (Marist HS, Palos Heights, Ill.) had four kills with three service aces and six digs.
