This week's ACTL newsletter is dedicated to my friend, colleague and teacher Michael Nolan.

If you listen to WVIK or have read the article in the Observer, you've heard others speak and write more eloquently than I can of his integrity, his sense of humor, his loyalty, to both the college and his friends and colleagues, and of his dedication to what we do here at Augustana College. Nor do I claim to know how to deal well with the death of someone close, someone whom I respected and admired, whose friendship and guidance I valued deeply. I can offer no advice on that.

As I sit here in his old office though, in the very chair where he spent God knows how many hours hard at work, I feel an obligation to pay my respects. He was indeed one of the kindest men I have known. He really would drop everything and offer a helping hand when asked.  He really was one of the most intellectually curious, rigorous thinkers that I have met in my lifetime-a true "liberal artist;" a man to emulate on so many levels.

While I don't know quite how to pay him the respect that he deserves, I need to attest to the huge impact that he has had on my life. All who have participated in the journalism program, worked with the English Department, the Honors program, the Reading/Writing Center, been a part of the Teagle consortium or the Adopt-a-School program should know what Michael Nolan did for this place. His impact on this college and on all the people that do or will call Augie home is a legacy that will last for many years to come. 

I will miss you Mike. I will be forever grateful for all you have done for me.
