2010 Season - Vikings fall in 88th minute

Sean Fidlow scored his first goal of the season, but the Vikings fell 2-1 at Aurora.

AURORA, Ill. - Aurora's Jim Kelly scored on an assist from Anthony Amedei in the 88th minute, giving the host Spartans a 2-1 victory over Augustana Wednesday afternoon. The tough-luck loss drops the Vikings to 0-3 on the season.

For the second time in its three contests, Augustana got on the board first, with Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.) getting his first goal of the season on an assist from John McSpadden (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) in the 22nd minute. Augustana freshman goalkeeper Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) made 10 first-half saves to keep Aurora off the board and the Vikings ahead 1-0 at the half.

It stayed 1-0, Augustana until early in the second half when the Spartans' Kyle Haumersen scored off a feed from Mike Emma to even the score. Kelly's game-winner 87:01 in spelled the difference.

Aurora outshot Augustana 19-10 for the game and also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Fouls were even at 13. Cowherd was credited with 12 saves while Spartan keeper Ethan Cashen stopped four Viking shots.

Next up for the Vikings are two matches in St. Louis, Missouri. Fontbonne will be the opponent on Saturday, September 11 at 3:00 p.m. and the Vikings will take on Webster on Sunday, September 12 at 1:00 p.m.
