2010 Season - Vikings give Walters first win as head coach

Senior Courtney Jungnickel totaled 42 kills and had 49 digs in the Elmhurst Invitational. The Vikings beat Westminster on Friday, September 3 to give Jamie Walters her first victory as head coach at Augustana.

First year head coach Jamie Walters picked up her first victory as the head coach of the Augustana volleyball program on Friday, September 3 at the Elmhurst Invitational. The Vikings defeated Westminster by a score of 3-0 (25-23; 25-15; 25-18) in the second round of the tournament.  Augustana finished the tournament with a 1-3 record. The Vikings fell to Gustavus Adolphus in the first round on Friday by a score of 3-1 (25-21; 21-25; 24-26; 16-25). On Saturday, Augustana lost to Lake Forest 3-1 (26-24; 19-25; 22-25; 21-25) and Chicago 3-1 (24-26; 21-25; 25-18; 20-25).

Senior outside hitter Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) had an outstanding tournament, recording 42 kills in the four matches (15 games). She also added 49 digs and had 12 service aces. For good measure she had six total blocks (one solo and five assists). Junior middle hitter Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) was also solid throughout the weekend with 37 kills and eight blocks (two solo and six assists).

Sophomore setter Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had 77 assists in the four matches and freshman setter Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) led the team with 79.

09/03 - Match #1 GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS 3, AUGUSTANA 1 (21-25; 25-21; 26-24; 25-16)
Three players were in double digits in the kill department but the Vikings still fell to Gustavus Adolphus by a score of 3-1. Senior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) each had 11 kills and freshman Paige Buchanan (Millard North HS, Omaha, Neb.) picked up 10. Sophomore Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) led the team in assists with 24 and freshman Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) added 20. The digs leader was sophomore Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) with 12.

Augustana won the first game by a score of 25-21 before Gustavus turned the table and won game two by that same 25-21 count. Game three went to the Gusties by a narrow 26-24 margin and the deciding game in the match went to Gustavus by a score of 25-16.

09/03 – Match #2 AUGUSTANA 3, WESTMINSTER 0 (25-23; 25-15; 25-18)
The Vikings were impressive in sweeping Westminster in three games to give Jamie Walters her first victory as the Augustana head coach. Senior Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) led the team in kills with 10 while senior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) each had nine. Jungnickel added 12 digs and four service aces. Sophomore Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) and freshman Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) each had 20 setting assists. Sophomore Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) was the team leader in digs with 13.

09/04 – Match #3 LAKE FOREST 3, AUGUSTANA 1 (24-26; 25-19; 25-22; 25-21)
All four games were close but the Vikings came up short on the first match of the Saturday round at the Elmhurst Invitational, losing to Lake Forest 3-1. Augustana won the first game 26-24 before dropping the next three by scores of 25-19; 25-22 and 25-21).

Senior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) had 12 kills, 14 digs, three service aces and two blocks (one solo and one assist). Junior Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) had seven kills and four blocks (one solo and three assists) and freshman Kristen Yerkes (Marist HS, Palos Heights, Ill.) picked up seven kills, six blocks (three solo and three assists) and two service aces. Sophomore Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) had a team-leading 20 digs. Freshman Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) picked up 20 setting assists and sophomore Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) added 15.

09/04 – Match #3 CHICAGO 3, AUGUSTANA 1 (24-26; 25-21; 25-18; 25-20)
The Vikings stunned the nationally ranked Maroons by winning the first game by a score of 26-24 but Chicago bounced back to win the next three by counts of 25-21; 25-18; 25-20. Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Brianna Skeens (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) each had 10 kills to lead the offense with Jungnickel getting 14 digs, four service aces and two assisted blocks. Freshman Hannah Reidenbach (Rockford Lutheran HS, Caledonia, Ill.) added eight kills, four digs and two service aces. Freshman Kristen Yerkes (Marist HS, Palos Heights, Ill.) had seven kills and one assisted block. Katrina Colclasure (Tri-Valley HS, Bloomington, Ill.) had 19 setting assists and Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) chipped in with 18. Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) led the Vikings in digs with 23.
