2010 Season - Vikings ninth in first poll

Senior Captain Matt Bowman and the Vikings start the season ranked ninth in the NCAA Midwest Region.

After a long summer of training, the Augustana men's cross country team is ready and waiting to start the 2010 season. Head Coach Paul Olsen's Vikings look to improve on their seventh place finish in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional meet during the 2009 campaign, but the road will not be easy. Augustana is ranked ninth in the preseason poll, conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Augustana opens the season on Wednesday, September 1 st with the Augustana Early Opener at Sunset Marina in Rock Island, Illinois. This is followed closely by the Western Illinois Invitational on Friday, September 3 rd in Macomb, Illinois. The Vikings are led by senior captains Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) , Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.) , and Brad Keating (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) .

The Vikings, currently ninth, are ranked behind Washington (1st), defending Division III national champion North Central (2 nd ), Wheaton (8 th ) and a slew of Wisconsin schools. Platteville (3 rd ), La Crosse (4 th ), Whitewater (5 th ), Stevens Point (6 th ), and Oshkosh (7 th ) are all looking to have successful years. Fellow College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin school Illinois Wesleyan rounds out the top 10 in a tie for 10 th with Chicago and UW-Eau Claire.

After winning two invitationals and recording two second place finishes last year, including the CCIW Championship, the Vikings know what it takes to have a successful year. Olsen's Vikings also have 15 th and 21 st place finishes in the 2007 and 2008 National Championships as experience, but they are ready for more.
