2010 Season - Vikings pegged seventh in CCIW volleyball race

Senior outside hitter Courtney Jungnickel is one of eight returning letter winners for coach Jamie Walters' first season at Augustana.

NAPERVILLE, Ill.—First-year coach Jamie Walter’s Augustana volleyball team been selected for seventh place in this year’s College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin pre-season coaches’ poll. The Vikings totaled 16 points in the poll. Carthage was predicted to win its seventh straight CCIW title.

Augustana finished 11-21 overall and 2-5 in the CCIW in 2009, tying with Wheaton and Millikin for fifth place. Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), a second team All-CCIW performer a year ago, leads a contingent of eight returning letter winners for Walters’ initial season at Augustana. She’ll be joined by Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.), Shannon Slick (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.), Erin Hollandsworth (Marian Catholic HS, Flossmoor, Ill.), Casey Komel (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.), Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.), Jenna Luck (Hall HS, Spring Valley, Ill.) and Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.).

Six-time defending champ Carthage, which has not lost a CCIW match in six years, was chosen by the league coaches as this year’s favorite. The Lady Reds received seven first place votes and 49 points. Both are the highest totals possible for the poll, in which coaches are prohibited from voting for their own teams. North Central was predicted for second with 42 points and one first-place vote. Illinois Wesleyan (35 points), Elmhurst (33), Millikin (22), Wheaton (20), Augustana (16) and North Park (7) rounded out the voting.
