NAPERVILLE, Ill.—Coach Brenton Joseph’s Augustana men’s soccer team has been pegged for sixth place in this year’s College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin race. The Vikings received 16 points in a pre-season poll of the conference coaches, tying them with North Central.

Augustana, which finished 6-10-3 overall in 2009, went 3-2-2 in conference play—good for a fourth-place tie. In 2010, the Vikings return five starters and 10 letter winners. Returning starters include Jason Beckus (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), Cory DeGrave (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.), Sean Fidlow (Carmel HS, Gurnee, Ill.), Sean O’Malley (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and Kevin Wyrostek (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.).

Defending conference champion Elmhurst was picked by the league coaches to repeat. The Bluejays received six of eight first-place votes and 48 total points. Wheaton was tabbed for second with 43 points and one first-place vote. Carthage got the nod for third with 33 points and North Park was close behind with 32 points and the remaining first-place vote. Illinois Wesleyan (25 points), Augustana and North Central (16 each), and Millikin (11) rounded out the poll.
