Crime Statistics

Augustana College publishes its annual crime and fire safety report in compliance with the Jeane Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and the Higher Education Opportunity Act 0f 2008. This report includes statistics for the previous three calendar years concerning crimes which have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or properties owned or controlled by the college; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to the campus.

The report also includes information on fire safety policies and procedures, emergency notifiication poliices and additional information on a wide range of topics linked to the safety and security of the campus community. Statistics related to crimes is solicited through regular contact with a variety of sources including, but not limited to, the Dean of Students office, the Office of Athletics, the Office of Student Activities, and the Rock Island Police Department.

These statistics are compiled and classified in accordance with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting System.

At the beginning of each term, all positions designated as having significant responsibility for student and campus activities are reminded of their obligation to report crimes as "Campus Crime Authorities." Examples of "campus officials" include athletic coaches and faculty advisors for student groups as well as the offices mentioned above. Reporting of criminal activity and alcohol-related violations that occur during events sanctioned by the college at off-campus locations is facilitated through contact with a liaison officer appointed by the Rock Island Police Department.

The Dean of Students and the Office of Public Safety publish the annual report. A daily log of reported crimes is maintained by the Office of Public Safety and is available weekdays between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Public Safety Office on the ground floor of Sorensen Hall.

All members of the campus community are encouraged to take the time to review the information contained within this report. If there are questions feel free to contact Thomas M. Phillis, Augustana Chief of Public Safety, at (309) 794-7279.
