Plans after graduation
I will be going to University of Chicago to work on my masters in Latin American Studies. After that, I plan to go on to get my PhD in history with an emphasis in Latin America.
How did Augustana prepare you for life after college?
My time at Augustana has been invaluable. I've met some amazing people and faculty who all helped me to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and shaped me as an individual. I've also had experiences as a result of being here that I don't think I would have been privileged to have otherwise, such as studying abroad in Ecuador and doing an interdisciplinary senior project with the history and Spanish departments.
What are you looking forward to about life after graduation?
I'm looking forward to continuing with my work and being that much closer to achieving my goal of becoming a professor. Hopefully I will be having many more adventures, both in the U.S. and abroad.
What will you miss about Augustana?
I will absolutely miss the faulty. They gave me a lot of guidance and encouragement during these four years. They also challenged me in many ways, and I am the better for it.
What was your favorite memory from Augie?
I made a ton of wonderful memories during my time here, both on campus and, especially, when studying abroad. But, I think one of my favorite memories happened during my freshman year in my LSFY class with Dr. Ellis. He told us he did not want to discuss Marx because he disagreed so strongly with his theories, so he had a guest lecturer for the day and left. We sat there confused for a minute waiting, and he came back in came back into the room, stood at the podium, and annouced, "Hello. I'm Karl Marx." He taught the entire class in character. I have no doubt that this experience contributed to my final decision to become a history major.
What advice would you give to current students?
Take advantage of all the opportunities being here offers you. Apply for the grants, take all the classes you can, travel abroad. Be demanding of yourself, take risks and you won't be able to say that any of your time here was a waste.
