2010 WOMEN'S GOLF SEASON REVIEW

Brittany Carr was selected as the Most Valuable Player for the 2009-10 women's golf team. She averaged 91.0 in 16 rounds.

The Augustana women’s golf team completed its fall season with a seventh place showing at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships. The Vikings shot a team score of 780 at the event, which was held at Highland Park Country Club in Highland Park, Illinois. The Blue & Gold resumed action by competing at The Shootout at Aguila on the team’s spring trip to Arizona before competing in three more tournaments in April. The women finished the year with an overall record of 48-52 in invitational play.

Sophomore Brittany Carr (Lincoln Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) tallied top-ten finishes at the Augustana Fall Classic, Iowa Wesleyan Invitational, and Augustana Quadrangular to highlight a season in which she led the team with a 91.0 scoring average. Carr competed in all 16 rounds of action, finishing with 1,456 strokes, and won “MVP” honors in her second year with the Blue & Gold. She fired a low round of 85 in the fall at the St. Ambrose Classic and was also Augustana’s second place finisher at the CCIW Championship Meet. Carr lowered her season best score to an 84 in the second round of the Mt. Mercy Spring Invitational, placing 10 th in the 54 player field. A pair of 88’s at the Millikin Spring Classic gave her a tie for 10 th out of 62 players to close out the season.

Freshman Morgan Wilkinson (Westmont HS, Westmont, Ill.) had a scoring average of 92.4 in the fall, but did not compete in the spring portion of the season. She hit 924 shots in 10 rounds of play. Wilkinson’s lowest finish was a tie for 15 th at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational, where she fired a 91. She also tied for 17 th at the St. Ambrose Classic with a two round total of 178. Wilkinson ended the fall season on a strong note, leading the Vikings with a 25 th place individual performance at the CCIW Championship Meet.

Freshman Megan Vandersee (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) finished third on the team with a scoring average of 92.8. She shot a total of 1,484 in 16 rounds on the course. Vandersee had one top-five finish and placed in the top 10 on five different occasions while earning the “Most Valuable Freshman” award. Her best performance came at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational where she shot an 82 and finished in a tie for third place in a 33 player field. The round of 82 was Vandersee’s best round and was also the low round for the entire team. She also secured top-10 finishes at the Augustana Quadrangular, North Central Cardinal Classic, Augustana Fall Classic and St. Ambrose Classic. She finished third for the Vikings and 25 th overall at the CCIW Championship Meet at the end of the fall season. Her best performance of the spring came at the Augustana Invitational where she tied for 16 th in the 52 player field with a score of 96.

Junior Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) turned in a scoring average of 96.9, totaling 1,453 shots in 15 rounds of action. Her best score was a 92 in the second round of the St. Ambrose Classic, where she finished in a tie for 24 th place. Berens earned a tie for 34 th place at the CCIW Championship Meet as Augustana’s No. 4 golfer. She earned her best finish of the year by tying for 11 th place out of 52 golfers at the Augustana Invitational. Berens fired a 94 at the event. She was also honored as “Most Inspirational” by her teammates and will serve as team captain for the 2010-11 season.

Senior Katherine Mascheri (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) had a scoring average of 99.9 and earned “Most Improved” honors for the second straight season. She made 1,598 shots in 16 rounds on the course. Mascheri’s low round came in the first round of the St. Ambrose Classic where she shot an 88. She went on to place 20 th at the event. Mascheri tied for 30 th at the Augustana Invitational in her best result of the spring season. Her top finish was a tie for 18 th in the Augustana Quadrangular in the fall.

Senior Elizabeth Scarlata (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) took 1,472 shots in 14 rounds of play, compiling a 105.1 scoring average. Her best round was a 93 at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational where she finished in a tie for 19 th place.

Junior Courtney VandeWiele (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) played eight rounds and took 949 shots, finishing with a 118.6 scoring average. She shot a 108 at the Augustana Fall Classic to finish in a tie for 46 th place.

Head coach Ron Standley’s Vikings competed in eight events in the fall, finishing third out of seven teams at the Augustana Quadrangular and fourth at the Augustana Fall Classic, Iowa Wesleyan Invitational, and St. Ambrose Classic. The Vikings were also fifth at the North Central Cardinal Classic, eighth out of 15 teams at the Monmouth Invitational, and 10 th out of 17 teams at the Illinois College Invitational. The team finished seventh at the 11 team Mt. Mercy Spring Invitational, fourth out of 11 squads at the Augustana Invitational, and seventh in the 11 team field at the Millikin Spring Invitational in the spring portion of the season.
