2009-2010 Season - Gogonas named MVP for Viking wrestlers

| George Gogonas was named the MVP of the 2009-10 Augustana wrestling team. He compiled a 27-12 record and qualified for the NCAA Division III national tournament. He also was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association "Scholar All-American Team". |
Augustana senior George Gogonas (Bowie HS, Austin, Texas) was named the Most Valuable Performer for the 2009-10 wrestling season. Gogonas, a four year letterwinner and regular at 125 pounds, compiled a 27-12 record during his senior year. He also qualified for the NCAA Division III national tournament and in doing so became the first Viking since 2006 to move out of the regionals.
He finished third in the NCAA West Regional and qualified for the national meet as an “at-large” participant. Earlier in the year he placed third in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament and he also earned “Scholar All-American” honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association. He finished his career with an overall record of 86-53.
Sophomore Alberto Quiros (Morton HS, Cicero, Ill.) was named the Most Dedicated Wrestler and freshman Tyler Hernandez (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won the Most Improved Wrestler honor. Senior Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) earned the Sacrifice Award.
Quiros compiled a record of 14-17 at 141 pounds and finished third in the CCIW. Hernandez was 5-12 at 149 pounds and Holland had a 23-22 mark at 157 pounds. Hernandez and Holland also placed third in the CCIW.
Augustana was 5-10 in dual meets this year and placed third in the CCIW tournament with 51.5 points and 10 th in the NCAA West Regional.
