| Senior Max Petersen was one of five Augustana athletes to share the MVP award for the Vikings' after their CCIW championship season in 2010. |
Five athletes shared the Most Valuable Performer award for the 2010 Augustana men’s track & field team after the Vikings put together a stellar season, culminating in a come-from-behind win in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on May 8 in Wheaton. Senior sprinter Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) and sophomore hurdler Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) were the winners of the MVP-Track honor. Sophomore thrower Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.), senior thrower Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and junior jumper Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) were the MVP-Field honorees.
Petersen, a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2009, served as team captain this past spring. He won CCIW titles in the 100 and 200 as well as the 400 relay as a junior and this year he placed second in the 100, third in the 200 and led off the victorious 400 relay team. Davis was a double winner in the 110 high hurdles (:15.04) and the 400 intermediate hurdles (:54.15) at the conference meet and he ran a leg on third place 1600 relay team. He met the NCAA Division III qualifying standard in both hurdle events and qualified in the 1600 relay as that unit recorded a time of 3:13.35 at the Drake Relays on April 24 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Christensen won the CCIW individual title in the discus with a toss of 160’ 9” and he earned NCAA Division III All-American honors with a third place finish (170’ 7”) at the national meet. That marked the second time in Christensen’s career that he earned All-American honors after finished sixth a year ago. He also set a new Augustana school record in the discus with a toss of 172’ 11” at the Viking Olympics on March 27. Decker won the shot at the CCIW meet with a throw of 52’ 8 ¾” on May 8. He qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet in the hammer with a mark of 184’ 10” at the Twilight Qualifier on May 21 at home. Zeunik finished second in the triple jump at the conference meet with a jump of 46’ 8” and he earned All-American honors by placing seventh at the NCAA Division III meet with a leap of 48’ 1 ¼”. Earlier in the spring he broke Geoff Smithers’ school record, which was set in 1968, with a leap of 48’ 2” at the Wartburg Select Meet on April 3 in Waverly, Iowa.
Sprinters Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) and Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) shared the MVP-Freshman for track events. Rindone won the 100 and 200 in the CCIW meet with times of :10.71 and :22.29. He also anchored the 400 meter relay team to victory in :41.92. Patton placed second in the 400 in the CCIW with a time of :48.98 and ran on the 1600 relay team with Davis that qualified for the national meet.
The MVP-Freshman for field events was shared by Chad Collins (Thornridge HS, Dolton, Ill.) and Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.). Collins was seventh in the CCIW triple jump (42’ 11”) and VanKirk placed sixth in the pole vault with a clearance of 13’ 9 ¼”.
Petersen was named the winner of the Most Inspirational award. Veteran head coach Paul Olsen, who was the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association “Midwest Region Coach of the Year”, also named captains for 2011. Distance runner Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.), hurdler/decathlete Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), pole vaulter Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.), thrower Pat Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.), decathlete Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.), distance runner Greg Weigand (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), sprinter James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Zeunik will share the captaincy for 2011.
Augustana, which won the CCIW title for the second time in three years and for the 16 th time in school history, finished the year rated third in the NCAA Division III Dual Meet Power Rankings. The Vikings won the Early Spring Opener, Viking Olympics and the Meet of Champions and placed second in the Wartburg Select, Lee Calhoun Memorial and Fight Scot Invitationals.
