For many of us, the most difficult part of advising is reacting to the inevitable emotional and academic struggles of our students; few advisors at a faculty-centered advising program like ours have been trained in academic, vocational, or personal counseling, and many of us feel uncomfortable moving much beyond directly academic matters with our students.  If you feel uncertain in a situation, here is some specific advice-collected from a group of experienced First Year Advisors at Augustana-about how you as an advisor might react to certain common but difficult situations.
