For many of us, the most difficult part of advising is reacting to the inevitable emotional and academic struggles of our students; few advisors at a faculty-centered advising program like ours have been trained in academic, vocational, or personal counseling, and many of us feel uncomfortable moving much beyond directly academic matters with our students.
