2009-2010 Season - Cox, Giedd, & Walter named 2010-11 captains

Emily Cox was selected as one of the three captains for the 2010-11 season. She was named to the academic all-conference team this past year and also swam on several first place relay teams.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana swimming program has announced its captains for the 2010-11 campaign and six student-athletes will handle that duty for the Vikings.  Kyle Waller (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.), Robert Flynn (Bartlett HS, Bartlett, Ill.), and Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) will be the captains for the men’s squad.  Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.), Alissa Giedd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.), and Tanya Walter (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) were named as the captains for the women’s team.

Waller was named to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin All-Conference team after placing fifth in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 100 freestyle at the championship meet.  He was the 50 meter champion at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational and also part of a 200 medley relay title team at the Principia Invitational.  Waller’s most impressive accomplishment came when he anchored the 200 medley relay team to a school record of 1:38.76 at the CCIW championship meet.  He also turned in the top time on the squad in the 50 (:21.93) & 100 (:48.30) meter freestyle events, with both of those times coming at the CCIW championship meet.  Waller tallied the fifth best time in school history in the 100 meter race and also finished with the sixth best mark all-time in the 50 meter event with those finishes.

Flynn earned all-conference honors after placing fourth in the one meter diving event and third in the three meter diving event at the championship meet.  He was an individual champion in the one meter event at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational and the Augustana Invitational.  Flynn also earned academic all-conference honors; one of four Vikings on the men’s swimming team to receive this distinction. He finished with a season best score of 253.20 in the one meter event and 259.60 in the three meter diving event.

Wind was part of the top 800 freestyle relay team this past season, helping the quartet finish with a time of 7:54.30 at the Grinnell Invitational.  He helped the 800 freestyle relay to a sixth place at the CCIW championship meet.  During the regular season, Wind performed admirably on several strong relay teams.  He was a part of the first place 200 freestyle team against Millikin and also placed second in the same event against Loras.  Wind finished second in the 400 freestyle relay at the Principia Invitational to close out the regular season.

Cox won the 500 freestyle race at the Halloween Invitational and was also a part of three winning relay teams.  She swam the third leg on the first place 500 freestyle team at the Halloween Invitational, anchored the top 800 freestyle team at the Augustana Invitational, and led off for the winning 400 freestyle team at the Principia Invitational.  Cox was one of nine women to be named to the academic all-conference squad.  She finished the season as a part of the relay team with the lowest time in both the 200 and 800 freestyle races.

Giedd was also named to the academic all-conference team.  She joined Cox as part of the top relay team in the 200 meter freestyle event.  The foursome swam a 1:45.83 at the CCIW championship meet, finishing fifth overall.  Giedd helped the 400 freestyle relay team to a victory at the Principia Invitational.  She was a part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team against Millikin, Monmouth, and Coe.  Giedd swam on runner-up relay teams in the 400 freestyle against Grinnell and at the Augustana Invitational.  She was also second in the 100 freestyle and the 200 medley relay in a dual meet with Loras.

Walter helped Augustana complete a terrific weekend of diving at the championship meet by placing first in both the one meter and three meter diving events.  She also won the one meter dive at the Augustana Invitational and Principia Invitational.  Her top score of the season in the one meter dive came at the CCIW championship meet where she scored a 309.05.  Walter also recorded her best score of the year in the three meter dive while performing at the CCIW championship meet, tallying a 315.70.

Head coach Scott Johannsen completes his second year at the helm of the Viking swimming program.  He has an 8-3 dual meet record with the women and a 6-5 mark with the men.  Both squads moved up one spot at the CCIW meet from one year ago.
