2009-2010 Season - Vikings get six qualifiers at Twilight Meet

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.—Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) had winning NCAA qualifying times at Friday’s Twilight Qualifier at Ericson Field. Three more Viking individuals and a relay team also met qualifying standards one week before the national meet. Two other Augustana individuals and a relay team captured wins as well.
Patton ran an NCAA-qualifying :48.48 in the 400 and Davis won the 400-meter hurdles in :54.16. Also meeting qualifying standards were Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) and Pat Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.), who finished second and fifth in the discus, throwing 172’ 6” and 162’ 3”, respectively, and Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) with a second-place 184’ 10” in the hammer. Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), Patton, James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) combined to qualify in the 4x100 relay, finishing second with a time of :41.78. That mark ranks second in school history, just .78 of a second off the school record.
Other individual winners for Augustana were Billy Wisser (Hersey HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:47.80) and Pat Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) with a 46’ 7½” in the triple jump. Davis also ran with Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.), Wood and Daniel Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) in the 4x400 relay, winning the event in a time of 3:17.51.
Pat Fritsch (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) (10:14.90), Ryan Bertram (Neuqua Valley HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.) (10:19.70) and Tommy Harris (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) (10:33.60) finished second, third and fourth behind Wisser in the steeplechase.
In the 800, Steven Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) led a contingent of four Viking place-winners. Rogers ran a second-place 1:57.26, followed by Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Mo.) in fourth (1:57.43), Dennis O’Flaherty (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) in sixth (1:59.43) and Jarrett Kessel (Amboy HS, Sublette, Ill.) in eighth (2:00.15).
In the javelin, Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) threw 171’ 5” to take second place and the Vikings captured fourth through eighth places as well. Alex Mikos (Fenton HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) finished fourth with a 154’ 1” throw, followed by Pat Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) (131’ 11”), Jeff Lackaff (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove , Ill.) (129’ 6”), Zach Riley (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) (124’ 4”) and Matt Deets (Polo HS, Polo, Ill.) (106’ 3”). The Vikings also added second through fourth place finishes in the 5000. Tom Ries (Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) ran 15:48.47 to take second, followed by teammates Ryan Miller (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) (15:50.45) and Eric Erspamer (Bartlett HS, Bartlett, Ill.) (15:51.26).
Doubet finished third behind Patton in the 400. He ran a :49.53 and teammates Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.) were sixth and eighth, respectively with times of :50.35 and :52.98. In the 400 hurdles, King finished third behind Davis, running a :56.52. Callan and Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) ran :57.20 and 1:00.83, respectively, to take fifth and sixth.
Ethan Gale was a third-place finisher in the decathlon with 4,330 points. Decker and Tim Whisler (Maine West HS, Des Plaines, Ill.) finished third and eighth in the shot. Decker threw 49’ 11¼” and Whisler 46’ 5¼”. In the long jump, Zeunik went 21’ 8¼” to take third place. Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) was fourth with a 21’ 3½”, Brett Becker (Cuba City HS, Cuba City, Wis.) seventh with a 20’ 2½” and David Zeko (Somonauk HS, Sheridan, Ill.) eighth with a 20’ 2¼”.
Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) and A.J. Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) each cleared 14’ 6 ¼” in the pole vault to tie for third place. Teammates Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) and Mikos went 14’ ½” and 13’ 6½”, respectively, to finish fifth and sixth.
The Vikings had four place winners in the 110 hurdles, led by Bradley’s fourth-place :15.89. King (:16.00), Zeko (:17.33) and Deets (:17.62) finished fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively. In the 1500, it was Joseph Zahn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) running a fourth-place 4:02.33. Jeff Miller (Dundee Crown HS, Algonquin, Ill.) was fifth in 4:04.01, Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) sixth in 4:13.37 and Kyle McNicholas (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) eighth in 4:16.30. Rindone finished fourth in the 200 with a time of :21.91 and teammates Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) (:23.55) and Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) (:23.92) finished sixth and eighth.
Matt Strickland (Driscoll Catholic HS, Glendale Heights, Ill.) was fifth in the high jump, clearing 5’ 3”. Four Vikings placed behind Zeunik in the triple jump. Maass (42’ 9”), Zeko (40’ 8¾”), Deets (39’ 11¾”) and Colin Johnson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) (38’ 2”) finished in fifth through eighth places.
Wood (:11.27), Ryan Brummet (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.) (:11.46) and Devon Pace (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) (:11.48) finished sixth, seventh and eighth in the 100 and Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) finished seventh in the hammer with a throw of 161’ 10”.
Augustana will have 12 individual qualifiers in 11 events as well as two relay qualifiers for the NCAA Division III national championships May 27-29 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Rindone has met the standard in the 100, Patton in the 400, Davis in the 110 and 400 hurdles, Wisser in the steeplechase, Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) in the 10,000, Zeunik in the triple jump, Decker in the hammer and shot, Stake in the decathlon and Christensen and Hoefle in the discus. The 4x100 team of Petersen, Patton, Wood and Rindone and the 4x400 unit of Davis, Patton, Somers and Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa) have qualified as well.
