2010 Season - Vikings pound out 20 hits in 14-4 win over Knox

Jared McIntosh had three extra base hits in a 14-4 victory over Knox.

Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.; now resides in Marina del Rey, Calif.) and Tyler Wilson (Valparaiso HS, Valparaiso, Ill.) each drove in three runs and Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) had four hits, including three for extra bases, as Augustana defeated Knox 14-4 Tuesday night at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The win improves the Vikings’ record to 22-15 heading into a season ending three-game series with Millikin this weekend.

After Viking starter Ben Heaton (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Heyworth, Ill.) retired the Prairie Fire in order in the top of the first, a pair of walks and a pair singles gave Augustana a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. The inning could have been worse for Knox, but the Vikings left the bases full.

David Jewell tripled to center leading off the second and, after a walk and hit batsman loaded the bases, scored on a catcher’s interference call. A bases loaded walk to Matt Lee forced in another run, giving the Prairie Fire its only lead of the night at 2-1.

Augustana put the game away with three runs in the second and five more in the fourth. In the second, Barker started things with the first of his three hits on the night. He moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to tie the game at 2-2 on Kevin Serna’s (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) double to left center. Knox starter Ryan Stoens then balked Serna home, walked Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) and gave up an RBI triple to McIntosh, ending his evening.

Augustana broke the game open with a five-run fourth. Reliever Jordan Ball retired the first two Vikings, but a McIntosh double to left started a parade of six straight batters to reach base. The last of those was Barker, who rapped a bases-loaded triple to right off new pitcher Colin Davis to put Augustana ahead 9-2.

In the meantime, Heaton settled down, shutting the Prairie Fire out in the third, fourth and fifth before getting the rest of the night off. He allowed just three hits and two runs (one earned) while fanning eight and was credited with the win to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Serna’s RBI single in the sixth made it 10-2 Vikings before Knox touched Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Augustana ended the game an inning early with a pair of runs each in the seventh and eighth.

Every Viking in the lineup had at least one hit in the game and seven had multiple hits. McIntosh led the way with four, including two doubles and a triple. Barker and Serna each had three hits. Stoens took the loss for an 8-25 Knox club.

Augustana hosts Millikin in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, May 8 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.
