2009-2010 Season - Augustana second at Fighting Scot Invite

MONMOUTH, Ill.—Throwers Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) and Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) each took home first place finishes and the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams also came away winners as Augustana took second place at the Fighting Scot Invitational Saturday. The host Monmouth Scots totaled 164.5 points to edge the Vikings, who finished with 156.

Christensen threw the discus 156’ 5”, finishing just ahead of teammate Pat Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.), who was second with a mark of 153’ 7”. Decker led a contingent of three Viking place winners in the hammer with a winning heave of 171’ 7”. Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) was fourth with a throw of 162’ and Christensen fifth with a 159’ 1”.

Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) was a second-place finisher at 400 meters, running a :48.70. Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa) was right behind in third with a time of :49.98 and Steve Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Greg Weigand (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) also earned points in the event, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively, with times of :50.84 and :51.20.

Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) took second in the 400 hurdles with a time of :54.65, while Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) was fourth (:56.22) and Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) sixth (:58.59). Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) also captured a second-place finish with a 163’ 5” throw in the javelin.

Alex Rindone’s (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) :11.00 in the 100 was good for third place while Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was sixth in :11.15. Pat Zeunick (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) were third-place finishers as well. Zeunick recorded a leap of 21’ 8” in the long jump and Stake went 6’ 2¾” in the high jump.

Bradley (:16.72) and Maass (:17.68) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 110 hurdles. The Vikings captured fourth and eighth place finishes in both the 200 and 5000. In the 200, James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) ran a fourth-place :22.57 and Jacob O’Rourke (Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) was eighth in :22.74. Brandon Gittelman (Naperville Central HS, Naperville) was fourth at 5000 meters in a time of 16:17.59, while Ryan Bertram ran a 17:37.22 for eighth place.

Augustana took places five thru eight in the 1500. Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) was fifth in 4:03.04 followed by Dan Bailey’s (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) 4:04.09, Brian Hart’s (University HS, St. Louis, Mo.) 4:05.27 and Brian Pollastrini’s (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) 4:06.10.

In the pole vault, Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) and A.J. Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) each cleared 13’ 10½” to tie for sixth place. Benning and Decker took sixth and eighth place, respectively, in the shot with throws of 48’ 2½” and 47’ 3”. Joe Zahn’s (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) 1:59.03 in the 800 earned him an eighth-place finish.

Next weekend the Vikings travel to Wheaton, Illinois for the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships. Action gets underway at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 7 and continues at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 8.
