2010 Season - Augustana swept by North Central

MOLINE, Ill.—CCIW-leading North Central proved to be too much for Augustana Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field by scores of 11-8 and 12-2. The Vikings’ Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) and Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) each went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI in game one. Schmidt had two doubles and a triple and Hoffman hit his third home run of the season. North Central rapped out 16 hits in each game to improve its record to 27-5 overall and 14-3 in CCW. The Vikings are now 21-14 overall and 5-12 in the league.

Game One—North Central 11, Augustana 8

After North Central scored in each of the first three innings off Vikings starter Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.) to take a 4-0 lead, Augustana got back in the game with three runs in the fifth. Unfortunately, the Cardinals responded with a seven-run sixth to take an 11-3 lead. The Vikings scored the game’s final five runs, but North Central was never seriously threatened.

Schmidt and Hoffman were right in the middle of things in Augustana’s three-run fifth. Schmidt had a two-run triple to right center and Hoffman brought him home with a single to left to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 4-3.

However, North Central’s number eight and nine hitters, Andy Wulbecker and Peter Romanello started the sixth inning off with a walk and a single. Nick Robinson, who had five hits in the game, followed with a bunt single and everyone moved up when Erickson overthrew Nick Kujawa (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) at first. The Cardinals went on to score seven in the inning, getting two-run doubles from Matt Burke and Wulbecker in the process.

Schmidt, Hoffman and Kujawa each drove in a run in a three-run seventh, and Augustana added single runs on a Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) two-run double in the eighth and Hoffman’s towering homer to center in the ninth.

In addition to Schmidt and Hoffman, Kujawa had three hits in the contest as well. Matt Erickson took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the year. Cardinal starter Mike Kloss improved to 6-1 with the win.

Game Two—North Central 12, Augustana 2

The nightcap followed a similar pattern as the opener, with the Cardinals taking the lead with single runs in the third and fourth off Viking starter Raymond Homolka (Glenbard West HS, Wheaton, Ill.). Wulbecker led off with a single and scored in the third and Steve Hlavac blasted a solo homer to left in the fourth.

Augustana tied it in the bottom of the fourth. Tyler Wilson (Valparaiso HS, Valparaiso, Ind.) and Kujawa had back-to-back singles to start the inning and both moved up on Joe Cecchi’s (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) sacrifice bunt. Jarl Dahlgren’s (Auburn HS, Rockford, Ill.) single to left scored Wilson and Kujawa came home when Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) reached on an error.

As in the first game, North Central answered with a big inning, getting six in the top of the fifth, highlighted by Burke’s two-run double down the left field line. The Cardinals pushed the lead to 10 with four runs in the eighth on a solo home run by Wulbecker and a two-run blast by Michael Corrigan, along with an RBI double by Matt Abraham.

Cardinal reliever Ricky Foytik, who threw three perfect innings, set the Vikings down in order in the eighth to end the game an inning early.

Foytik earned his third save, preserving the win for North Central starter T.J. Hecimovich, who improved to 2-0 on the year. Homolka fell to 1-1 with the loss.

The teams meet again in a single game at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 2 in Naperville, Illinois.
