Senior Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) delivered the game winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning of the first game of a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header with North Central on Saturday, May 1 at Carver Field. Walker’s single lifted the Vikings to a 6-5 victory in a game where they trailed 5-1 in the fifth inning. North Central took the nightcap 3-2. Augustana will now take a 28-11 overall record into the CCIW tournament and the Vikings finished league play with an 8-6 mark. North Central is now 29-9 and 9-5.

GAME 1 – Augustana 6, North Central 5 in eight innings

Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) drilled a single to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) with the winning run as the Vikings defeated North Central in the first game of a CCIW double header by the score of 6-5. The game was tied 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) singled with one out. Kernich replaced her as a pinch runner and advanced to third on a single to center by Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.).

Walker’s single, her second hit of the game, made a winner out of Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.). Ritzheimer came into the contest in the top of the eighth inning and set the Cardinals down in order. She moved to 11-3 with the win.

North Central scored single runs in each of the first three innings off Viking starter Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.). Augustana picked up one run in the bottom of the first when Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.), who led off with a single.

The Cardinals went ahead 5-1 in the top of the fifth but Walker hit a two run home run to make it 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh the Vikings tied it with two runs. Nelson led off with a single and Sarb singled her to second. Walker’s ground ball to second moved both runners up a base. A ringing double off the left center field fence by Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) scored Nelson but Sarb held up at third. Ashley Mulligan’s (Bradley-Bourbonnais HS, Bourbonnais, Ill.) infield single scored Sarb with the tying run.

Augustana used a multitude of pitchers in the contest as Gill worked the first three innings. She was replaced by Rachel Perry (Chillicothe IVC HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) for an inning and Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) worked the fifth and sixth. Gill came back in for the seventh and got the side in order to set up Ritzheimer for the victory.

The Vikings battered North Central’s Holly Roadruck for 19 hits in the game. Nelson and Sarb had four each and Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) added three. Rosin and Walker had two each.

GAME 2 – North Central 3, Augustana 2

Missed opportunities killed the Vikings in their attempt at a sweep as they left eight runners on base, including the bases  loaded in each of the last two innings. North Central made the most of its five hits and picked up a 3-2 victory with Lyndsey Payne getting the victory as she went the distance and scattered eight hits.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead of Augustana starter Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) with a single run in the first and two in the third. The Vikings broke the ice in the top of the fourth when Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) launched her ninth home run of the season well over the left field fence.

The Vikings threatened in the sixth and had the bases loaded with just one out but were unable to push home a run. In the seventh Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) singled to lead things off and went to second on a ground out by Ashley Mulligan (Bradley-Bourbonnais HS, Bourbonnais, Ill.). Snoreck went to third on a wild pitch. After a pop out in the infield for the second out of the frame, Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) single to center to score Snoreck. Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) singled to right field and Quaritsch was walked intentionally to load the bases. Nelson hit the ball on the nose but right at the center fielder to end the game.

Rosin, and Quaritsch each had two hits in the game. Ritzenheimer worked the first four innings and gave up three runs on just five hits and was tagged with the loss to drop to 11-4 on the year. Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) worked two scoreless innings in relief.

Lyndsey Payne went the distance for the Cardinals, allowing eight hits but just two runs. She had one strikeout and walked two, but one of those was intentional. She upped her mark to 11-3 on the year.
