Greetings from the Center for Teaching & Learning.
Welcome to the last two weeks(!) of the academic year. (Yes I know, there are also those things called finals; still, the year will be over soon!)
As you probably know, 25 of your colleagues are piloting a new SRI this week. In a timely article in the Chronicle last week, the Idea Center, provider of the instrument we're piloting, was described as "an education research group based at Kansas State University [that] has been spreading its particular course-evaluation gospel since 1975." The article goes on to cite one of the main reasons that ACTL has taken on organization of the pilot: "The central innovation of the IDEA system is that departments can tailor their evaluation forms to emphasize whichever learning objectives are most important in their discipline." (In fact, the individual faculty member has that control.) If you know of one of your colleagues who is participating, ask them how it went. Of course I suspect the real difference will be in the feedback provided, which of course will come after grades are turned in! We hope to have a full report from all participants by the Fall Faculty Retreat.
I also wanted to encourage you to take a look at a website hosted by Brigham Young University titled The Growth Mentality. There you'll find a summary of work by Psychologist Carol Dweck on "mindsets," as well as some useful links that may help you in course design and execution. If you're familiar with Dweck's work, I think you'll find this to be a handy and useful summary; if you're not, this will be a great introduction. Take a look!
