2010 Season - Vikings drop twin bill at Carthage
KENOSHA, Wis.—Augustana dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Carthage Monday, yielding a pair of eighth inning runs in game one as the Red Men came back to post a 9-8 win. In game two, the Vikings were handcuffed by the three-hit pitching of Eric Rohe, falling 6-0. Augustana is now 20-12 on the year and 5-10 in CCIW play. Carthage improves to 19-11 and 10-5 in the conference.
Game One—Carthage 9, Augustana 8
Carthage scored in each of the first five innings, but thanks in large part to a six-run third, Augustana still held an 8-7 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth inning of game one.
Billy Herrin and Joey Aiello led off the frame with back-to-back singles off Viking reliever Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.). Both runners moved up on Tim Hansen’s ground out to third and Will Hodges followed with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game. After Erickson walked Josh Albers, Vince Frede (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) came on in relief and issued back-to-back base-on-balls to Mike Petti and Matt Soderlund to force in the go-ahead run. He got Zach Kozlowski with a called third strike to end the inning. Red Men reliever Chadd Ori, who went the final 6 2/3 innings, gave up a Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) single and a walk to Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) in top of the ninth but pitched out of trouble to secure the win.
The Vikings got an RBI single from Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) and a sacrifice fly from T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. However, Carthage responded with three in the bottom of the inning and a single run in the second off Augustana starter Mike Trotta (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) to take a 4-2 lead.
In the Viking third, O’Donnell and Nate Richardson (Smoky Hill HS, Centennial, Colo.) had back-to-back singles to start the inning and Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.; now resides in Marina del Rey, Calif.) reached on an error to load the bases. Joe Cecchi (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) followed with an RBI single and Juhl’s grounder to third drove in the tying run. Kevin Serna’s (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) two-run single gave Augustana a 6-4 lead and knocked out Red Men starter Chris Krepline. Ori came in and walked Schmidt before Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) touched him for a two-run double to make it 8-4. McIntosh singled and O’Donnell was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, but Ori turned Richardson’s come-backer into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.
Carthage cut the lead to 8-7 with single runs in the third, off Trotta, and fourth and fifth off reliever Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.). The score stayed that way until Carthage’s rally in the eighth.
Ori got the win to improve to 2-0. He gave up just five hits and one run in his 6 2/3-inning stint. Erickson took the loss in his first decision of the season. The Vikings rapped out 13 hits, led by Richardson’s three. Hoffman, McIntosh and O’Donnell each had a pair.
Game Two—Carthage 6, Augustana 0
Carthage’s Rohe was the story in game two. Kozlowski’s RBI single in the bottom of the second gave him all the runs he would need, but the Red Men obliged him with four more in the third and one in the fourth.
The Vikings would manage just seven base runners all game—on three singles, a walk, two hit batsmen and a Carthage error—and never more than one in any inning. The only Viking to advance as far as second was Schmidt with one out in the ninth.
Rohe went the distance, fanning seven, to improve to 3-1 on the year. Viking freshman McIntosh started and suffered his first loss after a pair of wins. Kevin Kulig (Benet Academy, Lemont, Ill.) was a bright spot for Augustana, allowing just one hit and no runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief. Hoffman, Richardson and Juhl accounted for the three Viking base hits.
