2010 Season - Vikings sweep to stay in hunt for CCIW tourney

There was nothing similar about the two games in a crucial College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin softball double header except the results. Augustana swept Millikin on Monday afternoon/evening at Carver Field by scores of 2-1 and 12-10. In the process the Vikings moved to 27-10 overall and 7-5 in the CCIW and kept alive their hopes of landing a berth in the conference tournament.

Game one was a pitcher’s duel and Augustana won it on a hit by Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) in the bottom of the seventh. In the second game the Vikings survived a seven run seventh inning by the Big Blue and prevailed 12-10.

Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) collected seven hits in eight at-bats with three runs scored, three RBI and a pair of home runs.

GAME #1 – Augustana 2, Millikin 1
Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) delivered a two out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) with the winning run in a 2-1 victory over Millikin in the first game of a CCIW double header. The game was tied 1-1 when Kernich led off the seventh with a line drive single to center field. She moved to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.). A ground ball off the bat of pinch hitter Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) moved Kernich to third and then she scored on Fobert’s single over the shortstop’s head.

Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) picked up the victory after working the final two innings in relief. She came on in the sixth  and gave up a single and back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs. A double play scored the lone Millikin run of the game and then Humbert coaxed Jenna Anderson to pop out to her to end the inning.

Augustana got on the board in the first inning when Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) hammered her seventh home run of the season over the left field fence off Big Blue starter Whitney Schafman. Quaritsch finished the game with three hits to lead the Vikings’ attack.

Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) got the start for Augustana and she worked the first five innings, allowing no runs and four hits.

GAME #2 – Augustana 12, Millikin 10

In a wild affair, Millikin scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning and had the tying run at the plate when Augustana reliever Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) got Big Blue leftfielder Caitlin Reed to fly out to center to end the game.

Millikin jumped out to a 1-0 lead off Viking starter Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) before Aten settled in and tossed four consecutive scoreless innings. In the meantime, Augustana put five runs on the board in the top of the third and three more in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.

In the five run third Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) hit a two run home run and Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) had a two run single.  The big blow in the fourth was a two run double off the bat of Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.).

It looked like the game might end early when the Vikings scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 10-1 lead. However, Millikin scored two in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-3 and keep the game alive.

Augustana answered with two in the top of the seventh to push the advantage to 12-3 but Millikin roared back with seven in the bottom of the frame. The Big Blue had seven hits and finally chased Aten from the hill. Aten picked up the victory, working 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and eight hits.

Quaritsch went four for five with two runs scored and two RBI while Trojanowski had three hits, two runs scored and two RBI. In all, the Vikings had 15 hits in the game and played errorless in the field.
