2010 Season - Augustana falls 6-4 at Carthage
KENOSHA, Wis.—Augustana dropped the first of this weekend’s three game set with Carthage by a score of 6-4 Saturday. The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader was postponed because of fog and, along with a single game originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, has been rescheduled as part of a twin bill on Monday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. in Kenosha. Augustana is now 20-10 overall and 5-8 in the CCIW while Carthage improves to 17-11 and 8-5 in the league.
Both starters, Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.) of Augustana and Mario Perez of Carthage, handcuffed the opposition early. Erickson held the Red Men scoreless through the first three innings and Perez did him one better, holding the Vikings without a hit through four.
Carthage scored first when Tim Hansen led off the bottom of the fourth by reaching on an error. He came around to score one out later on a Josh Albers single to center, giving the Red Men a 1-0 lead. Augustana took advantage of a pair of Carthage errors in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.; now resides in Marina del Rey, Calif.) reached on a Red Man miscue to lead off the inning and scored on Kevin Serna’s (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) one-out grounder to short which also resulted in an error. Perez got out of the inning with no further damage, stranding two Viking runners.
The teams traded runs again in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth. Barker’s two-out RBI double to right tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth.
The Red Men took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, knocking Erickson out of the game in the process. RBI singles by Trevor Whately and Billy Herrin gave Carthage a 4-2 lead.
Two out singles in the top of the seventh by Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.), Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) and Nick Kujawa (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) scored a run and cut the lead to 4-3, but Carthage responded with a pair of runs off reliever Mike Pagano (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) in the eighth. Tyler Eickmeyer doubled to right center to score Matt Soderlund and came around to score himself on a Herrin single to left.
A Joe Cecchi (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) double to left and a Nate Richardson’s (Smoky Hill HS, Centennial, Colo.) single to right center produced a Viking run in the top of the ninth, but Red Men reliever Trace Ruffie stranded pinch runner Anthony Concialdi (Fremd HS, Barrington, Ill.) to preserve the win.
Erickson dropped to 1-2 on the year with the loss. He went 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three of which were earned. He walked two and fanned four. Perez worked 6 2/3 innings to earn the win and improve to 3-3. He gave up five hits, two walks and three runs while striking out nine. Kujawa had Augustana’s only multi-hit game with a pair of singles.
