2010 Season - Home runs help salvage split with Bluejays
Augustana relied on the long ball to salvage a split with Elmhurst in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin twin-bill on Saturday, April 24 at Carver Field. After taking a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning of game one the Vikings watched as the Bluejays scored six runs to take a 9-4 victory. Bouncing back in game two, the Blue & Gold clubbed three home runs in the first two innings and went on to win 8-1. With the split, Augustana is now 25-10 overall and 5-5 in the CCIW while Elmhurst moved to 20-12 and 7-5.
GAME 1 – Elmhurst 9, Augustana 4
First baseman Amanda Bowlin hit a one out grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to cap off a six run outburst that carried Elmhurst to a 9-4 victory in the first game of a CCIW double header. Augustana had taken a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two run home run off the bat of Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) before Elmhurst came to bat in the seventh.
Viking starter Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) got the first batter, Maggie Yagen to strike out but the ball got away and Yagen reached first. A single by Michele Fornier moved Yagen to second. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base and catcher Jill Karsa came through with a single to right center to score both and give the Bluejays a 5-4 advantage. An error and a fielder’s choice that did not result in an out loaded the bases and Bowlin drilled a pitch from Aten over the left field fence for a 9-4 lead.
Elmhurst scored three runs in the top of the third to grab a 3-0 lead but the Vikings battled back. In the bottom of the fourth Nelson’s ground out scored Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.), who had singled to lead things off. Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled to right field after that and drove in pinch runner Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) to cut the lead to 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) doubled to right center and gave way to pinch runner Ashley Mulligan (Bradley-Bourbonnais HS, Bourbonnais, Ill.). Nelson then homered to left center, her fifth of the year to give the Vikings a short-lived 4-3 advantage.
GAME 2 – Augustana 8, Elmhurst 1
In the first game Elmhurst pitcher Stephanie Iori kept the Vikings at bay for the most part and picked up the victory. She got the call as the starter in game two and it didn’t take long for Augustana to knock her around. In the first inning Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) and Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) both reached on errors and Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) drilled a two out offering from Iori over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead.
Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) led off the second with a towering home run to center field to make it 4-0 and Rosin hit a two run blast to push the lead to 6-0 and that was all for Iori.
The Vikings added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) worked five innings to get the win, her 10th of the year against just three defeats. Ritzheimer struck out three and allowed just five hits while walking three. Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) pitched the final two innings and gave up two hits but no runs.
Rosin, Nelson and Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) each had two hits in the victory.
