2010 Season - Sweep of Knox pushes record to 24-9

The first game was a blowout and second game was tight but the results were the same as Augustana swept a non-conference double header with Knox on Wednesday, April 21 by scores of 10-2 and 4-2. The two victories pushed the Vikings’ overall record to 24-9 on the season. Augustana  used a total of four pitchers in the two games with Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) getting the victory in game one and Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) picking up the win in game two. Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) was given credit for a save in the first game Rachel Perry (Chillicothe IVC HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) recorded a save in game two.

GAME 1 – Augustana 10, Knox 2

Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) hit a grand slam home run in the top of the fourth inning to break the game wide open and Augustana cruised to a 10-2 victory. The Vikings put up single runs in each of the first three innings and led 3-0 before Rosin’s big blast.

She led off the game with a single to left field, stole second and third and came home with the game’s first run on an error. In the second inning Ashley Mulligan (Bradley-Bourbonnais HS, Bourbonnais, Ill.) homered to left field and in the third Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) drove in Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) with a single to make it 3-0.
Following Rosin’s home run, Knox scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth but the Vikings put up two in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it 10-2. Mulligan hit her second home run of the contest, a two run blast, in the fifth.

Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) did not give up a hit through the first three innings and she struck out two before being removed. She picked up the victory and moved to 6-1 on the season. Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) worked the final three innings and nailed down her fourth save of the campaign.

Mulligan was the hitting star with three hits in four at-bats while scoring three runs and driving in three. Her two home runs were the first of the season for her. Rosin, Kernich and Sarb each had two hits.

GAME 2 – Augustana 4, Knox 2

A three run uprising in the top of the fourth inning proved to be the key ingredient as Augustana defeated Knox 4-2 to complete a non-conference double header sweep.

The game was scoreless heading into the fourth when Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) led off with a bunt single. Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) doubled to left field and Kernich came all the way around to score the first run of the game. Ashley Mulligan (Bradley-Bourbonnais HS, Bourbonnais, Ill.), who had homered twice in the first game, singled to left but Trojanowski was cut down at the plate trying to score for the second out of the inning. Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) singled to left to move Mulligan to second and Emilee Goad (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) tripled to right field to plate Mulligan and Walker.

Knox answered with a run in the fourth to trim the lead to 3-1 but the Vikings scored a single run in the fifth. Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) tripled to right center and Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) singled her in.

Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) picked up the victory. She was the starter and worked the first three innings by design before giving way to Rachel Perry (Chillicothe IVC HS, Chillicothe, Ill.). Gill struck out four and did not allow a hit as she moved her record to 6-3. Perry worked the final four innings and was given a save.
