2010 Season - Vikings split twin bill at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis.—After dropping a 5-2 decision in the opener, the Augustana softball team rebounded for a 3-2 win in the nightcap of Sunday’s doubleheader at Carthage. Dawn Kernich’s (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) two-out, two-run double in the fifth provided the margin of victory. The Vikings are now 22-9 overall and 4-4 in CCIW play. Carthage is 13-8 overall and remains a game ahead of Augustana with a 5-3 league mark.

Game One—Carthage 5, Augustana 2

Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, blasting her sixth home run of the season off Lady Red starter Kelsey Epping. Carthage responded in the bottom of the frame, taking the lead with a two-run double to left off the bat of Alyssa Schrader.

The Lady Reds extended the lead to 4-1 when Jenny Burke touched Augustana starter Erica Aten (Moline HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) for a two-run double in the bottom of the third. Melissa Nelson’s (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) sacrifice fly to center in the fourth brought home Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) to make the score 4-2, but Carthage answered with an unearned run off Viking reliever Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) in the fifth.

Augustana threatened in the top of the seventh, getting the tying run to the plate after singles by Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Brittany Snoreck (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.). However, Epping got Missy Fobert (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) to fly to center to end the game.

Aten struck out seven in four innings, but suffered her first loss of the season after five wins. Epping went the distance for Carthage, fanning 11 while walking none, to improve to 9-2 with the win. Quaritsch finished 3-for-3 to pace the Viking offense.

Game Two—Augustana 3, Carthage 2

Augustana jumped in front again in game two when Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) led off the second with a single and came around to score on a Trojanowski ground out. Carthage tied it with a run in the top of the third (Augustana was the home team in the nightcap). Meghan Roman scored the tying run on Stephanie Noel’s single to center off Viking starter Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.).

Trojanowski reached on a Carthage error leading off the bottom of the fifth and was retired on Andi Walker’s (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) fielder’s choice grounder to second. One out later, Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) reached on an infield hit, setting the stage for Kernich’s heroics. The Augustana junior doubled to left off Lady Red pitcher Krystina Leazer, scoring Walker and Rosin with the go-ahead runs.

Burke’s RBI single to in the sixth off reliever Rachel Perry (Illinois Valley Central HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) cut the Viking lead to 3-2. Perry was replaced by junior Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) and Humbert got the final out in the sixth and then retired Carthage in order in the seventh to record her third save of the season. Perry was credited with the victory improve to 3-1 on the year. Ritzheimer allowed just one run in her four innings. Leazer went the distance and absorbed the loss, falling to 4-2. Kernich was the only Viking with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
