2010 Season - Vikings fall to Elmhurst 12-8
MOLINE, Ill.—Augustana missed out on a chance at a weekend sweep Sunday, dropping the finale of a three-game set with Elmhurst by a 12-8 score at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The loss leaves the Vikings at 18-9 on the year and 5-7 in the CCIW. Augustana is next in action on Tuesday, April 20, hosting Loras in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
Elmhurst took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Viking starter John Peters (Alleman HS, Milan, Ill.) retired the first two Bluejays without incident, but Nick Herrera and Dan Matkovic each singled and Mike Kerr drew a walk to load the bases. Dan Bosco’s single to left brought in the game’s first two runs. The Bluejays extended the lead to 3-0 with a single run in the third on a leadoff double by Zach Hofer and a Matkovic sacrifice fly.
Augustana evened the score in the bottom of the third. Bluejay starter Cody Boals issued one-out walks to Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) and Kevin Serna (Hoffman Estates HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.). Both moved up on a passed ball and Lamb came home on Kurt Schmidt’s (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) single to right field. After Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) drew a walk to load the bases, Nick Kujawa (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) lofted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Serna. A Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) single to center brought home Schmidt with the tying run.
The tie didn’t last long however, as Tim Nolan pounded a two-run homer to left—his first of the season—in the top of the fourth after Bosco had led off the inning with a walk. Nolan’s blast ended the day for Peters, but Elmhurst added two more runs in the inning off reliever Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Hills, Ill.), to push the lead to 7-3.
Schmidt’s RBI single in the bottom of the fourth cut the lead to 7-4, but the Bluejays came right back with three in the top of the fifth. The Augustana defense played a big part, committing two errors in the frame, including a throwing error on a dropped third strike to start the inning.
The Vikings chipped away and cut the lead to 10-6 with single runs in the sixth and seventh. However, the Vikings missed an opportunity for more, leaving the bases loaded in the seventh against reliever Dan Napientek. Elmhurst took advantage, scoring two more runs in the eighth against Augustana reliever Joe Ufheil (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) for a 12-6 advantage.
A single by Kujawa and a double by McIntosh each drove in a run in the Viking eighth. However, that’s as close as Augustana would get as Bluejay reliever Joe Ramirez went the last inning and a third, closing out the game despite hitting two batters.
Peters lasted 3 1/3 innings and allowed five hits and five runs to fall to 3-2 on the year. Boals got the win for Elmhurst to improve to 3-1, giving him three of the team’s five wins this season. Hoffman continued to sting the ball, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Three freshmen—Schmidt, Kujawa and McIntosh—each had two hits and two runs batted in.
