2010 Season - Augustana splits doubleheader at North Park
CHICAGO, Ill.—Each team had a seventh-inning, two-run, game-winning rally Saturday as Augustana and North Park split a doubleheader at the Holmgren Complex in Chicago. Host North Park took the first game 3-2, while Augustana, playing as the home team in the nightcap, came back with a pair of solo homers to claim a 2-1 victory. Augustana is now 21-8 on the season and 3-3 in CCIW play. The team travels to Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday, April 18, for a doubleheader with Carthage.
Game One—North Park 3, Augustana 2
Mallory Bieritz’s two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh gave North Park the win in game one. Annalis Matta and Katie Anderson started the inning by reaching on a single and walk, respectively. It looked like Viking pitcher Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) might get out of the jam when she got Melissa Abraham to line into a short-to-first double play, but she walked the next two batters and Bieritz followed with her game-winner.
North Park got on the board first when Matta walked and scored on a Jessica Abezetian single in the bottom of the third. Augustana took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Dawn Kernich’s (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) two-out single scored Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.), who had singled, and Missy Fobert (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.), who had drawn a walk.
Ritzheimer went the full 6 2/3 innings, allowing just four hits, but issuing nine base-on-balls. She took the loss, dropping to 9-3 on the year. Kate Seebacher also went the distance for the hosts and improved to 10-8 with the win. Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) was the only player with multiple hits in the game with a pair of singles.
Game Two—Augustana 2, North Park 1
North Park led 1-0 going to the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap. Seebacher had allowed just five singles in six shutout innings, but Augustana’s Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) led off the frame with a game-tying solo home run—her team-leading seventh of the season. After a Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) single, it looked like the teams might be headed for extra innings when Peterson line into a third-to-first double play. However, Fobert ended the contest when she hammered a solo homer to left field. It was Fobert’s fourth round tripper of the year.
North Park had taken its 1-0 lead in the fifth, parlaying a Seebacher single and a pair of errors into an unearned run off Augustana starter Erica Aten (Moline HS, Coal Valley, Ill.).
Before the seventh, the only time Augustana came close to threatening was in the bottom of the fifth when Peterson and Fobert each reached with two-out singles. However, they ended the inning stranded on first and second.
Aten went the distance to earn her fifth win of the season against no losses. She scattered eight hits and issued just one walk. Seebacher, who fired 13 2/3 innings on the evening, fell to 10-9 with the tough-luck loss.
