2009-2010 Season - Walsh, Mathieson place second at Augie Invite

Led by individual second place finishes from a pair of juniors, the Vikings placed sixth in the Augustana Invitational on Saturday, April 17 at Paul V. Olsen Track. Amy Walsh (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and Ella Mathieson (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) were runners-up in the 400 hurdles and long jump respectively in the 10-team meet that was held in tremendous weather.

Walsh ran 1:06.12 to place second in the 400 hurdles, trailing only the 1:05.50 turned in by Michelle Voigts of Luther. Mathieson recorded a leap of 16’ 5 ¾” in the long jump, which was just four inches short of the winning mark of 16’ 9 ¾” by Morgan Leffel of Monmouth.

Those two turned in the top performances for an Augustana team that scored 88 points and placed sixth in the team standings. Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the meet with 204.50 points while Wisconsin-Stevens Point was second with 134. Monmouth took third with 133.50 and Luther had 99 points in fourth. Loras was one point ahead of Augustana and took fifth with 89. St. Ambrose (87.50), Wisconsin-Platteville (66), Dubuque (46) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (14) rounded out the field.

Besides the second place finishes from Walsh and Mathieson, the Vikings got a third out of Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) in the 400 with a time of :59.09.

The 3000 steeplechase event produced four place winners for veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s team. Freshman Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) was fourth in 11:55.23 and sophomore Sarah Johnson (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) placed fifth in 12:32.16. Junior Katie Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) finished sixth in 12:46.97 and junior Anita Maurer (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) placed seventh in 13:05.28.

Senior Caitlin Quinn (Metamora HS, Metamora, Ill.) cleared 10’ 2 ¾” to take fourth in the pole vault and senior Libby Geison (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) was sixth at 9’ 9”. Sophomore Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.) placed fifth in the javelin with a toss of 112’ 3”. Senior Ainsley Fedler (Burlington HS, Burlington, Iowa) was sixth in the 100 in :12.83 and freshman Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) was sixth in the 1500 in 4:58.79. Freshman Emily Margosian (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) finished seventh in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.16 and freshman Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) took eighth in the 10,000 with a time of 40:18.93.

The 1600 relay team was fourth in 4:01.08 and the 400 relay grabbed fifth in :50.15.
