2009-2010 Season - Impressive victory at Meet of Champions
Taking advantage of some beautiful weather, the Augustana Vikings rolled to an impressive team victory at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, April 17 at Paul V. Olsen Track. Augustana won a total of seven events and added three more NCAA Division III national meet qualifiers en route to piling up 248.50 points.
The Vikings easily defeated second place Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which scored 166.50 points in the runner-up position. Wisconsin-Whitewater was third with 118 and Wisconsin-Stevens Point took fourth with 110. Monmouth placed fifth with 106 and Carthage was sixth with 84. Wisconsin-Platteville (53), St. Ambrose (47), Loras (32), Dubuque (23) and Luther (21) rounded out the 11-team field.
Freshman Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) was a double winner in the sprint events, taking the 100 in :10.57 and the 200 in :21.83. He also teamed with senior Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), freshman Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) to finish second in the 400 relay with a time of :41.99.
Sophomore Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) won the 110 high hurdles in :14.86 and took fourth in the 400 intermediates in an NCAA Division III qualifying time of :53.94. He also ran the leadoff leg on the winning 1600 meter relay team that clocked 3:16.88. He was joined on the victorious 1600 relay by senior Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa), Wood and Patton.
Freshman Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) won the 5000 in 15:21.35 in an impressive effort as he ran the entire race from the front.
Junior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won the triple jump with a leap of 46’ 11 ¾” and took second in the long jump at 22’ 2 ¼”. Junior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 15’ 1 ¾” to win the pole vault.
Besides Davis, the other two NCAA qualifying performances for veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s team came in non-winning efforts. Junior Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) was sixth in the 10,000 but qualified for the national meet with a time of 30:58.94 with a time that is the eighth fastest in Augustana history. Sophomore Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) took sixth in the discus with a qualifying throw of 161’ 7”.
In addition to running on the second place 400 relay team, Petersen took second in the 100 in :10.94. Patton was also a busy sprinter as he added a third place clocking of :48.54 in the 400 to go along with his efforts in the two relays.
Senior Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) took second in the javelin with a throw of 171’ 10” and he was also fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 43’ 5 ¼”. Senior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) placed second in the decathlon with 6,049 points. The 3200 relay team was also second with a time of 8:17.56. Sophomore A.J. Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) finished second in the pole vault with a clearance of 14’ 8”.
Sophomore Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) placed third in the 110 high hurdles in :15.47. Sophomore Billy Wisser (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) ran 9:29.80 to take third in the 3000 steeplechase. Junior Ryan Miller (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) was third in the 5000 in 15:45.73.
Junior Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.) finished fourth in the 1500 in 3:59.14 and sophomore Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) placed fifth in the same event in 4:00.0. Sophomore Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) was fourth in the 3000 steeplechase in 9:36.08 and sophomore Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) was right behind him in fifth place with a time of 9:36.12. Sophomore Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) recorded a leap of 21’ 2” to take fifth in the long jump.
Borchert took sixth in the 400 in :49.74 and junior Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) finished eighth in :49.78. Freshman Pat Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) was sixth in the 110 high hurdles (:15.96) and seventh in the 400 intermediates (:55.42). Junior Don Anciaux (Iowa City HS, Iowa City, Iowa) scored 5,136 points to place seventh in the decathlon. Junior Patrick Hoefle (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) was eighth in the discus with a toss of 154’ 10” and senior Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) was eighth in the 10,000 with a time of 31:19.66.
Augustana will split its team this coming week, sending some athletes to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on April 23-24 with the rest competing at the Loras Invitational on Saturday, April 24.
