2010 Season - Offensive explosion buries Knox 19-7
An offensive explosion carried Augustana to a 19-7 non-conference baseball victory over Knox on Thursday, April 15 at Blodgett Field in Galesburg, Illinois. The Vikings pounded 20 hits, including six home runs, and scored in every inning except the fifth en route to moving their record to 16-8 overall.
Four Augustana players collected three hits and every starter in the lineup had at least one hit. Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.), T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.), Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo. – now resides in Marina del Ray, Calif.), and Joe Cecchi (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) all had three hits. O’Donnell drove in four runs while Schmidt, Barker and Cecchi had three RBI apiece.
Schmidt, O’Donnell, Barker, Cecchi, Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) and Jared McIntosh (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) all hit home runs.
The Vikings broke out of the gate quickly with three runs in the first and three in the second to lead 6-0 after two innings.
Freshman Ben Heaton (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Heyworth, Ill.) worked the first three innings of the game and he was given credit for the victory. He struck out two and gave up one run on two hits with one base-on-balls. By design Augustana used a total of six pitchers in the game and only senior Jon Carlson (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) worked more than one inning.
After the Vikings scored a single run in the top of the third to make it 7-0, Knox started to chip away, scoring a single run in the third, two in the fourth, single runs in the fifth and sixth and two in the seventh. After the Prairie Fire put two up in the seventh, the lead was down to 11-7 but Augustana scored a solo run in the top of the eight on a two out double by McIntosh followed by a single off the bat of Barker.
In the top of the ninth inning Schmidt hit a two run home run and McIntosh followed with a two run homer. Cecchi also nailed a two run home run and Lamb hit a solo blast to close out a seven run frame.
