With the two victories, Augustana pushed its overall record to 20-7 on the year while Monmouth fell to 8-14. Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) had five hits in the two games and scored three runs.

GAME # 1 – Augustana 4, Monmouth 3

Despite having three runners thrown out at the plate during the course of the game, the Augustana Vikings were able to come from behind and record a 4-3 non-conference victory over Monmouth in the first game of a double header. Augustana also stranded eight runners but were able to put together four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to come up with the win.

Monmouth jumped in front 1-0 with a single run in the top of the second. A single to left field by Brittany Forney scored Charlotte Hoffmann. The Vikings answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) was hit by a pitch with one out and then stole second base. She went to third on a ground out and scored on a double to left by Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.).

The Scots scored single runs in the fifth and sixth off Viking starter Rachel Perry (Chillicothe IVC HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) to take a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. In the fourth inning Augustana had a runner thrown out at home trying to score on a base hit. In the sixth two more Vikings would be cut down at the plate but three did manage to score to provide the winning margin.

Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) led off with a single to left field and then Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled her to second. Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) walked to load the bases. Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) singled to right to drive in Peterson and Trojanowski and knot the game at 3-3. Fobert was cut down going to second but Sarb wound up on third. Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) attempted a sacrifice but Sarb was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Rosin advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. Kernich drew a walk and didn’t stop at first and scampered to second. Quaritsch followed with a single to left to score Rosin with the lead run but Kernich was thrown out trying to score to end the inning.

Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) pitched the seventh and gave up a hit but secured the save, her first of the year. Perry, who allowed just five hits in six innings but did walk three, got the win and is now 2-1 on the year.

Trojanowski had three hits and Quaritsch collected two to lead the offense.

GAME #2 – Augustana 9, Monmouth 1

The Vikings battered a trio of Monmouth pitchers for 11 hits and used five Fighting Scot errors to their advantage in picking up a 9-1 win in the nightcap of a non-conference double header sweep. Sophomore Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) worked six innings and picked up the complete game victory to move to 4-0 on the year. She struck out seven and allowed just three hits while walking two.

Monmouth scored an unearned run in the first off Aten to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Vikings got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) doubled to left center to score Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.), who had singled.

In the bottom of the fourth Augustana scored a pair of unearned runs to take a 3-1 lead. Pinch runner Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) stole home for the first run and Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) came home on a single to right by Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.).

Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) drove in Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) with a single in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the sixth the Vikings scored five unearned runs, thanks to two Monmouth errors to cut the game short due to the eight run rule.

Rosin had three hits while Trojanowski and Quaritsch each had two. Quaritsch drove in three runs and Walker had two RBI.
