GAME # 1 – Illinois Wesleyan 3, Augustana 2 in eight innings
Katie Bruins delivered a bases loaded single in the top of the eighth inning to score Alyssa Vorel with what proved to be the winning run as Illinois Wesleyan topped Augustana 3-2 in the first game of a crucial College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header. After Wesleyan scored to go ahead, Augustana reliever Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) got the final two outs of the inning. However, in the bottom of the inning the Vikings went down one-two-three as Titan reliever Lauren James struck out the side.
The game was scoreless heading into the top of the sixth when Illinois Wesleyan broke through against Augustana starter Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) with a pair of unearned runs. Down 2-0, the Vikings struck back quickly off Titan starter Christy Engel. With one out Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled to center field. Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) singled to center to move Trojanowski to second base. Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) walked to load the bases. Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) went in to run for Trojanowski at this point and she scored on a ground ball off the bat of Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.). Fobert was out on the play as she raced to third. A single to right by Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) drove home Rosin with the tying run.
It remained tied until Wesleyan scored the decisive run in the top of the eighth. Augustana only managed three hits in the game off Engel and James. Ritzheimer worked six innings and had six strikeouts and allowed just four hits.
