2010 Season - North Park tops Augustana in 10 innings
MOLINE, Ill.—The Augustana baseball team dropped the third game of this weekend’s series with North Park, falling 5-4 in 10 innings Sunday at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The game was tied 3-3 after nine innings but the visitors put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the 10th. Augustana threatened in the bottom of the frame, pushing across a run and leaving the tying run stranded on third.
Raymond Homolka (Glenbard West HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was an emergency starter for Augustana, filling in for Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.) who was scratched shortly before game time. Homolka was solid, going five innings and allowing just one earned run. North got to him for an unearned run in the top of the first, but the home team evened the score in the second on a T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) double and Joe Cecchi’s (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) RBI single.
North Park took a 3-1 lead with single runs off Homolka in the third and fourth innings. Augustana evened it up again in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) touched North park starter Jake Hollinsaid for an RBI single and the tying run came home on an error.
After retiring North Park in the fifth, Homolka yielded to reliever Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) to start the sixth. Erickson was outstanding, shutting North Park out for four innings while facing just one hitter over the minimum. Meanwhile, Hollinsaid was handcuffing Augustana. He also benefitted from a pair of pickoffs, one by his catcher Zach Deutscher in the seventh, and one of his own in the eighth.
Vince Frede (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) came on to relieve Erickson in the 10th and gave up a double down the right field line to North Park leadoff man Trevor Popp. Popp then moved to third on Wade Yunker’s sacrifice. Following an intentional walk to Mike Domenick, Frede unleashed a wild pitch that brought home Popp with the lead run and moved Domenick to second. He came home one out later on a Ryan Javech single to make it 5-3.
In the bottom of the inning, Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) started a rally with a one-out single through the right side. Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) followed by pulling a shot that kicked up chalk down the left field line and went for a double. Serna moved to third on the play. That ended Hollinsaid’s day after an outstanding 9 1/3-inning performance. Dan Treccia came on in relief and gave up a sacrifice fly to Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) to cut the lead to 5-4, but got Nate Richardson (Smoky Hill HS, Centennial, Colo.) to ground out to Popp, who made a tremendous play, to end the game.
Hollinsaid got the win to improve to 5-1 on the season. Treccia was credited with his first save. Frede fell to 0-1 with the loss. McIntosh paced the Augustana offense, going 3-for-3 with a run batted in. Serna added a pair of hits and Schmidt made several fine plays defensively at shortstop.
Augustana will be at home again on Wednesday, April 14, when they’ll take on Illinois Wesleyan in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.
