2009-2010 Season - Relay and distance depth lead way at WIU

Depth in the relays and the distance events were the keys as Augustana finished fourth in the Lee Calhoun Invitational on April 9-10 at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. The Vikings scored 72 points in the 16 team field, trailing only two NCAA Division I schools and one NCAA Division II institution. Eastern Illinois won the event with 194 points while Marquette was second with 130.33. Indiana-Purdue @ Fort Wayne was third with 75. Trailing Augustana in fifth was St. Ambrose with 67 points. Iowa (64.50), Western Illinois (54.50), Monmouth (44.83), Millikin (41.50), Florissant Valley (28), Ashford (26.50), Illinois College (21), Lincoln (17), Bradley (5.83), Principia (3) and Knox (1) rounded out the field. Of the 16 teams, only six were NCAA Division III schools.

Augustana placed in all five relay events and had multiple placewinners in three of the distance events to account for the majority of its points.

Freshman Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) finished second in the 5000 with a time of 20:05.04 to grab the top individual place. Sophomore Sarah Johnson (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) was third (20:18.49), freshman Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) took fourth (20:19.86) and junior Kristen Sattizahn (Erie HS, Erie, Ill.) was fifth (21:17.05).

Junior Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) took third in the 800 with a time of 2:18.30 while freshman Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) was eighth in 2:21.54. The 3000 saw junior Brittany Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) take fourth in 11:38.63 with junior Katie Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) placed fifth in 11:41.01 and Sattizahn was sixth in 12:09.86.

Senior Caitlin Quinn (Metamora HS, Metamora, Ill.) was the lone Viking to place in the field events as she was sixth in the pole vault with a clearance of 10’ 5 ½”.

The 3200 relay of Jones, freshman Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.), Coverick and sophomore Angela Pisani (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was second in 9:52.79. The 800 relay of junior Brittany Bennett (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.), sophomore Catherine Foreman (St. Joseph-Ogden HS, St. Joseph, Ill.), sophomore Morgan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) and sophomore Katie Beden (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) took fourth in 1:48.91. The sprint medley team of senior Ainsley Fedler (Burlington HS, Burlington, Iowa), Foreman, junior Amy Walsh (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and Hottle also finished fourth in 4:28.53. The 400 relay unit of Bennett, Gale, freshman Valerie Bach (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) and Fedler placed fifth in :50.90. The 1600 relay of Hottle, Walsh, Bennett and Jones closed out the meet with a fifth place time of 4:03.87.

Augustana will host the Augustana Invitational on Saturday, April 17 at Paul V. Olsen Track.
