2009-2010 Season - Second ranked Vikings place second at WIU
Competing in a 14 team field that featured five NCAA Division I teams didn’t faze veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s Augustana team much at the Lee Calhoun Invitational in Macomb, Illinois. The two day event was held on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 at Western Illinois University and the Vikings were an impressive second in the team standings.
Eastern Illinois won the event with 193.50 points while Augustana was second with 130. Western Illinois took third with 93 while the University of Iowa placed fourth with 86. Monmouth (74), St. Ambrose (60), Marquette (55), Lincoln (39), Millikin (34.50), Illinois College (34), Ashford (14), Florissant Valley (8), Bradley (6) and Principia (4) rounded out the field. Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, Iowa, Marquette and Bradley are all NCAA Division I schools.
The Vikings had just one even winner and that was freshman Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) in the 3000. He ran 8:51.79 to lead a one-two-three sweep as freshman Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was second in 8:53.46 and senior Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) took third in 8:57.21. Junior Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.) finished fifth in 9:07.36, senior Tom Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) placed sixth in 9:12.86 and freshman Tommie Harris (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) was seventh in 9:26.80.
Senior Jeff Lackaff (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) finished second in the javelin with a toss of 175’ 9” with senior Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) taking third in 174’ 5”. In the pole vault junior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) was third with a clearance of 14’ 5 ¼” and junior Alex Mikos (Fenton HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) placed sixth at 13’ 5 ¼”. Sophomore Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) was third in the 5,000 with a time of 15:38.4 and senior Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) took sixth in 15:53.8.
The 3000 steeplechase produced three place winners as sophomore Billy Wisser (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) took third in 9:44.18 with sophomore Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) finishing fourth in 9:49.47 and senior Pat Fritsch (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) placing seventh in 10:31.91.
Sophomore Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) was a double placewinner, taking fourth in the 400 intermediate hurdles (:54.65) and seventh in the 110 high hurdles (:15.28). Sophomore Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) was eighth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of :15.68.
Sophomore Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) placed fifth in the hammer (165’ 3”) and sixth in the discus (153’ 10”). Senior Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri) was fifth in the 1500 in 4:04.54 and junior Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) took sixth in 4:07.68. Freshman Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) sped to a sixth place finish in the 400 in :49.54 while freshman Daniel Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) took eighth in :50.38. Junior Greg Weigand (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) ran 1:56.08 to take seventh in the 800 and freshman Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) was eighth in the 100 in :10.80.
The Vikings were impressive in the relays, placing second in the sprint medley, third in the 400 and 3200, fourth in the 800 and fifth in the 1600. The sprint medley team of sophomore Floyd Mays (Moosehart HS, Chicago, Ill.), freshman Jacob O’Rourke (Davenport Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), freshman Ryan Brummet (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.) and Dennis O’Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) recorded a time of 3:38.30 to finish in the runner-up position. The 400 relay of senior Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), Patton, sophomore James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Rindone ran :42.06. The 3200 unit of freshman Joe Zahn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), senior Jeff Miller (Crown HS, Algonquin, Ill.), junior Tim Faith-Rosley (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) and junior Jarrett Kessel (Amboy HS, Sublette, Ill.) took third in 8:03.22. The 800 relay ran 1:31.01 with Mays, freshman Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.), O’Rourke and freshman Devon Pace (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.). The 1600 relay of Davis, Patton, Doubet and Wood recorded a fine time of 3:19.87 for its fifth place finish.
Augustana, which is ranked second in the latest NCAA Division III dual meet rankings according to the US Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association, will host the Meet of Champions on Saturday, April 17 at Paul V. Olsen Track.
