2010 Season - Vikings drop twin bill to North Park
MOLINE, Ill.—North Park pounded out 28 hits and took advantage of 11 Augustana errors Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field by scores of 14-3 and 7-2. Augustana drops to 14-7 overall and 2-5 in the CCIW, while North Park improves to 15-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
Game One—North Park 14, Augustana 3
Each team put a run on the board in the first. North Park’s came when leadoff hitter Trevor Popp singled to center, stole second and eventually scored on the first Augustana error of the day. Augustana came right back with an RBI single from Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.), scoring Kevin Serna (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.), who had led off the bottom of the inning with a single.
Five hits, two more errors and a wild pitched helped North Park add four runs in the top of the second. Mike Domenick’s two-run single was the big hit. Mike Barker’s leadoff triple in the bottom of the frame sparked a two-run response by Augustana. Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.; now resides in Marina del Rey, Calif.) came home on a Mike Lamb (Ottawa High School, Ottawa, Ill.) single and Lamb, in turn, scored on a Serna base hit.
After North Park extended the lead to 7-3 and knocked out Augustana starter John Peters (Alleman HS, Milan, Ill.) with two runs in the third, NPU starter Mike Giovenco settled into a groove. He allowed just one infield hit and a pair of walks while shutting Augustana out over the final five innings.
Meanwhile, North Park broke the game open with a five-run fourth, making the score 12-3. The visitors again got some help from Augustana as the home team committed two more errors and another wild pitch in the inning. North Park added single runs in the fifth and seventh inning to account for the final score. The game was shortened to seven innings by the 10-run rule.
Giovanco went the distance to get the win and even his record at 4-4. Peters suffered his first loss after three wins.
Game Two—North Park 7, Augustana 2
Starting pitchers Peter Sparacino of North Park and Josiah Martin (Canton HS, Canton, Ill.) of Augustana both threw well in the nightcap. Sparacino scattered six Augustana hits without allowing a run over the first seven innings while Martin gave up just one earned run in 5 2/3 innings of work.
North Park took a 2-0 lead on an unearned run in the third and an RBI double by Devin Melicio in the fourth. They knocked out Martin in the sixth, getting two more unearned runs to push the lead to 4-0. It grew to 6-0 when a passed ball led to another earned run against reliever Tyler Willis in the seventh and Mike Sommerfield drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Augustana finally got to Sparacino for an unearned run in the eight. North Park touched Willis for a run in the top of the ninth and the final run of the day came home on a Hoffman sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Tito Garza.
Sparacino went eight innings to improve to 4-1 on the year while Martin took the tough-luck loss, falling to 3-2. Hoffman went 3-for-4 and Serna and Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) each had a pair of hits.
The two teams meet again in a 12:00 noon single game Sunday, April 11 at Swanson Stadium Brunner Field in Moline.
