2009-2010 Season - Distance runners lead way at WIU Invite
A dominating team performance in the 3000 allowed Augustana to grab an early lead in the Lee Calhoun Invitational on Friday, April 9 at Western Illinois University in Macomb. The Vikings swept the first three places and scored a total of 33 points in the event.
The Blue & Gold amassed 51 points after six events to grab a 19 point lead over second place St. Ambrose (32). Marquette is third with 30 and Western Illinois is fourth with 19. Eastern Illinois (18), Iowa (16), Illinois College (16), Ashford (9), Millikin (5) and Monmouth (3) rounded out the scoring.
Freshman Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) won the 3000 with a time of 8:51.79. Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was second in 8:53.46 with Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) finishing third in 8:57.21. Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Rockford, Ill.) placed fifth in 9:07.36 with Tom Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) grabbing sixth in 9:12.86. Tommy Harris (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) was seventh with a time of 9:26.80.
The sprint medley team of Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.), Jacob O'Rourke (Davenport Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), Ryan Brummet (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.) and Dennis O'Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) placed second with a time of 3:38.30.
Taking third was the 800 relay unit of Pat Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.), Devon Pace (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.), Mays and O'Rourke with a clocking of 1:31.01. The 3200 relay team of Joe Zahn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), Jarrett Kessel (Amboy HS, Sublette, Ill.), Tim Faith-Rosley (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) and O'Flaherty was second in 3:38.30.
Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) was fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 165' 3".
The second day of competition will be on Saturday, April 10.
