2010 Season - Sweep of St. Ambrose pushes record to 18-5
Augustana, ranked ninth in NCAA Division III, used a variety of pitchers and some effective and timely hitting to sweep a non-conference double header from St. Ambrose on Thursday, April 8. The Vikings won the first game 6-0 and took the nightcap 6-1 and moved to 18-5 on the season.
GAME #1 – Augustana 6, St. Ambrose 0
A trio of pitchers combined to toss a three hit shutout as Augustana defeated St. Ambrose 6-0 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 8 at Carver Field. Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton-Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) tossed four innings as the starter and gave up just one hit and one base-on-balls while striking out three. She picked up the victory and moved her overall record to 9-2. Rachel Perry (Illinois Valley Central HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) worked the fifth and did not allow a hit and had one strikeout and Kelli Humbert (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) closed out the game by pitching the final two innings. She preserved the shutout despite allowing two hits and she had one strikeout.
Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) put the Vikings on the board in the bottom of the first inning when she blasted a home run to deep left field with Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.), who had led off with a single, on board.
In the second a two out single by Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) brought in Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) to make it 4-0. The Vikings put up a single run in the fourth when Quaritsch lifted a sacrifice fly that drove in Fobert. The final run came in the bottom of the sixth. Fobert led off with a double, stole third and tallied on Rosin’s single to right field.
Rosin, Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Fobert all had two hits. Fobert also scored three runs and Quaritsch had three RBI.
GAME #2 – Augustana 6, St. Ambrose 1
The Vikings once again used three pitchers and the rotation was effective as the Queen Bees could manage just one run on five hits as Augustana scored a 6-1 victory.
Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) started and worked the first three innings and she was given credit for the victory. She allowed two hits and one walk and struck out one batter. Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) came on in the fourth and pitched three innings, giving up three hits and one run. Rachel Perry (Illinois Valley Central HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) worked a one-two-three seventh to close things out.
Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) led off the bottom of the first with a home run to give Gill a quick 1-0 lead.
That held until the fourth when the Vikings hit for four runs of St. Ambrose starter Sarah Porzel. Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) singled to get things going. Both players gave way to pinch runners with Abby Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) running for Snoreck and Mallory Huml (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) replacing Sarb. Staples then stole third and Huml took second. A single off the bat of Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) brought them both home and Walker scampered to second on the throw. She scored on an RBI single off the bat of Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.). Fobert scored when Rosin tripled to right field.
In the sixth Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) doubled and came home on a single by Emilee Goad (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.).
St. Ambrose scored its lone run in the top of the fifth off Aten.
Augustana pounded 11 hits with Rosin and Quaritsch each collecting two.
