2009-2010 Season - 2010 INDOOR REVIEW

Once again, the Augustana men’s track & field team of veteran head coach Paul Olsen put together a tremendous indoor season. The Vikings were outstanding throughout the entire 2010 campaign, eventually finishing the season ranked sixth in the final NCAA Division III dual meet rankings. Olsen’s crew won a total of three meets, finished second in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship and also placed fifth at the always tough Warhawk Classic.

The Vikings won the Sol Butler Classic in Dubuque, Iowa to start off the season on the right note on January 16. They also won the Lutheran Triangular on January 30 in Waverly, Iowa and the Dubuque Invitational on February 20. In the CCIW meet Augustana scored 151.5 points to place second and totaled 70 points in the Warhawk Classic on February 5 in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Augustana junior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) capped a tremendous indoor season by earning All-American honors at the NCAA Division III national meet. Zeunik placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 47’ 5”. He was the only Viking to compete in the national meet but four of his teammates did meet the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standards in their respective events but were not selected to participate.

Junior pole vaulter Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 15’ 4 ¼” at the Lutheran Triangular in Waverly, Iowa on January 30. The other three national qualifiers all came out of the 35 pound weight throw. Senior Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) had a heave of 58’ 3” at the CCIW championship on February 26 in Naperville, Illinois. Sophomore Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) also qualified at the CCIW meet with a toss of 56’ 10” and sophomore Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) had a national qualifying performance of 55’ 6 ¼” at the Sol Butler Invitational in Dubuque, Iowa on January 16.

Not only did Zeunik earn All-American honors but he also won the CCIW title in the triple jump with a leap of 47’ 8”. He was joined on the winner’s podium by freshman Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.), who won the 200 with a time of :22.22. While those two were the only individual conference champions, the Vikings did get three individual runner-up performances. Senior Max Petersen (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was second in the 55 with a time of :06.56 and sophomore Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) placed second in the 55 hurdles with a time of :07.87. Senior distance standout Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) was second in the 3000 with a time of 8:32.09.

There were three school records broken during the 2010 season. Zeunik’s leap of 47’ 8” to win the conference title erased the old mark of 46’ 3” set by Craig Lyon back in 1998. Rindone’s :22.22 effort at the CCIW meet bettered the previous record of :22.56 set by Jason Myers in 2005. Decker’s 58’ 3” performance at the CCIW meet broke the old record of 57’ 0 ¾” by Tom McIntire in 2006.

The Vikings have been a fixture in the NCAA Division III’s top 10 in dual meet rankings for the last five years and 2010 was no exception. They tallied 154.88 points to finish sixth in a top 10 that was dominated by teams from the Midwest Region. Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the top team with 169.46 points while Wisconsin-Stevens Point was second with 164.50. North Central (163.11), Wisconsin-LaCrosse (162.05) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire (158.38) rounded out the top five just ahead of Augustana’s sixth place finish.

It was an interesting indoor season for the Vikings as Olsen missed the first month of the season because of his involvement with Augustana’s Holden Village term in the state of Washington. He returned to take over at the beginning of February. In his absence, Ron Standley, a veteran coach in the Augustana system handled the interim head coaching responsibilities.
