2009-2010 Season - Gogonas earns academic honor from NWCA
Augustana senior George Gogonas (Bowie HS, Austin, Texas) has been named to the 2009-10 “Scholar All-American Team” by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, it was announced today. Gogonas, the regular 125 pounder for head coach Eric Juergens’ team, was one of 143 wrestlers across the nation to earn recognition.
Gogonas enjoyed a tremendous season, and career, for the Vikings. He was 27-12 this past year and he qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet when he placed third at the NCAA West Regional on February 20 at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gogonas became the first Viking to win a trip to the national tournament since Ryan McMurray and Brian Daly accomplished that feat in 2006. He won one match at the national tournament, which was held on March 5-6 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before being eliminated.
Gogonas became third year head coach Eric Juergens’ first ever national tournament qualifier. Gogonas was just the fifth seed at 125 pounds in the regional and he started the day with a 7-3 win over fourth seeded Daron Hohbein of Concordia-Moorhead. That slotted Gogonas into the semi-final with number one seed Jake Oster of Elmhurst. Gogonas fell 9-6 and dropped into the wrestleback portion of the bracket. He beat sixth seeded Jimmy Schoettle of Chicago 8-5 and then drew Hohbein again in the third place match. He beat Hohbein 3-2 and had to face Oster in a “true second” place match. He lost to Oster and then had to wait for the at-large selections at the conclusion of the meet.
The top two finishers in each weight class were automatically advanced to the national tournament and the rest of the finishers were vying for eight “at-large” positions. Gogonas won one of the coveted spots.
Gogonas was third in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament at 125 pounds and he wrapped up his career with an 86-53 overall record.
In order to be nominated for the Scholar All-American team, the individual student-athlete had to maintain a grade point average of at least 3.20 over the last two grading periods prior to the season and be either a national meet qualifier or have a .500 record or better. Gogonas, the son of John and Mary Lou Gogonas of Austin, Texas, is a finance and international business major. He posted a 3.207 grade point average combined from the spring of 2009 and the fall of 2009.
